Just saw it... Best movie of the year by a mile. I despise musicals, but I wouldn't even really consider this one. The final hour or so is a pure melodrama and relationship story.

However the musical number on the cliff overlooking LA was pure movie magic. It was line you were watching Gene Kelly or Fred Astare and Ginger Rogers.

I also think the final 10 minutes is as good as anything I've seen in years. Emma Stone should win an Oscar for thst look alone as soon as she sees Gosling. And he should win too awed on his performance.

It was heartbreaking and honest. Who hasn't seen "the one that got away" and not had that reaction? You're almost paralyzed for a moment..in a state of disbelief, yet emotional.

I can't stress enough how much people should see this movie. I just thank the movie gods these kinds of original, incredible films are still being made.
If this movie doesn't destroy at the Oscars, then something is really fricked up. It's easily the best picture of the year.

Watched last night. Great movie for sure. Love the City of Stars piece

POSSIBLE SPOILERS.....................The only thing I did not like about the ending is that they made it seem like John Legend was the decisive point or the catalyst of the events to transpire. But the real reason things happened or didn't happen the way they did was because gosling did/didn't follow his dreams. Emma followed hers in both the reality and alternate reality.

It was crushing at the end to watch Gossling play the song he wrote for her to her while knowing she's gone forever.

I don't think he wrote it for her, it was the song he was playing when she first saw him

I know what you mean though

I didn't get that feeling at all. He was a part of it, but it was ultimately Goslings decision, and the fact that she ends up getting the part filming in London or wherever. You never know where that lifestyle will take you and you don't have much control if you really want to "make it"

Wife and I watched it Sunday. Not a fan of musicals, yet after about the first 12 minutes I got drawn in. At one point she and I laughed for about a minute solid. We both really enjoyed it, can't see it translating to a 65" tv at home the same. My only real knock is the decibel level at some points of the musical scenes, way too loud.

I saw it at home and still had the same amazement as everyone else. I can only imagine what it's like in a theater.

The most unrealistic thing about this movie was when Gosling put in a $20 bill in the tip jar before he played piano during the Christmas scene. No sane person would ever tip a full Andrew Jackson.

Why's that unrealistic?

You realize he keeps his money, right? That's the whole point Timmy

Yeah but anyone who's going to tip him isn't going to believe someone tipped a full $20. It's just not believable. Maybe $5

People tip $20s to entertainment at nice restaurants all the time....

100% guarantee the pianist at Mansurs got a few $20 tips this past weekend

Big city, someone could be on a date and drinking. Pretty believable

He didn't have a decision to make in the alternate reality, in this regard. In the alternate reality the scene made it look like Gosling was telling him "hey man I'm I'm on a date with my gf, don't bother me". So Legend was never able to pitch his proposal.

I mean does Mia's parents still not ask if Gosling has anything going for him? Does he still not wallow in self-pity all because he decided to chase Mia? I guess the ultimate decision was whether one of them wanted to chase each other's dream, but I don't see how Gosling not accepting the band offer changes any of that.

I HATE musicals.

Even so, I took a chance and went to see this today mainly because I know what kind of chemistry Gosling and Stone have on screen.

This was one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I'm late but I just got out and love love loved the movie.

I had no idea it was going to have such a strong focus on jazz, and I'm a huge jazz fanatic so I was in love almost immediately.

I also love all of the Hollywood scenery. L.A. is my favorite city in the country, and I get to go 4-5 times a year.. And the movie made me want to pack up and move today. I'm staying in studio city by the Hollywood sign in a couple weeks, and this movie got me hyped to explore the area.

Emma Stone was absolutely fantastic. That's a damn good actress.
