What did Darth Vader actually accomplish?

He was frightening, and the Death Star was built, Alderaan destroyed, etc. He brought balance to the force? Another failed Death Star?
After 7 films now, what is his actual legacy? I'm not saying he was a galactic failure - but I'm just wondering what he actual legacy was.

He destroyed the Jedi. He killed the sith lord which brought balance between the light and dark. Which is how the universe is supposed to be.
When he was Anakin, he was light. A great man who brought good to the Galaxy. As Vader, he was a scourge. He encompasses the possibilities of both good an evil.

Vader was the Emperor's Enforcer more than anything else. He fricked some people up and terrified anyone he came across. He was really not in an admistrative role until Empire. He was the Luca Brasi to his Don Vito, not the Tom Hagen like a lot of people seem to think.

Wiped out almost all of the rebellion.
Killed all but one of the old Jedi that were still known.
Oversaw a lot of the emperor's war machine and was the right hand man.
The star wars timeline is crazy though.
1,000 year old Republic, becomes a 25 year empire, then becomes a 30 year old republic, only to be destroyed again.
Those first 1000 years must have been uneventful.

Tom Hagen would be Grand Moff Tarkin for sure.

I mean, there were 13 other grand moffs if I remember correctly. The emperor trusted Tarkin the most (which is why he assigned him to the middle of. O where to build the deathstar) but Vader and the emperor were top dogs and no one came close

Just like there are multiple 4 star generals and only one joint chief.
Tarkin was in charge of the overseeing all affairs outside of the core worlds, that is a huge undertaking. Vader was over him for sure, but Vader also respected tarkin.

Vader was accountable to Tarkin. He couldn't just choke him out like he could the others and actually obeyed him. Once Tarkin was dead, he was a rabid dog let off the leash. Vader actually didn't have any admistrative roles unless directly summoned to do such (usually by Tarkin himself). You don't want Vader around unless some heavy shite is going down, since he's clearly not good for troop morale. Vader was always a last resort.
There were people higher on the ladder than Vader (like Tarkin and Thrawn), but he was always effective. The Emperor didn't personally trust Vader worth a shite and knew he'd be the first to kill him given a chance, and rightfully so since he plots to have Luke murder him.

Darth Vader brought about a return of the Sith to prominence in the galaxy. Anakin Skywalker redeemed himself by bringing balance to the force.
Judging by Kylo Ren's adulation of Vader, the few who knew of Anakin's redemption did not tell anyone else, so Darth Vader's legacy would be that of an ultimate evil that failed against ultimate good.

I mean, was he? Yes Vader was the Emperor's apprentice, but he wanted Vader to know his place. He also knew that Vader was trying to murder him. Tarkin wasn't trying to do that, so he might have allowed him to have authority over Vader. Sure Tarkin was always cordial with Vader in not "commanding" him and simply "summoning" him, but as Leia said herself that she knew Tarkin was "holding Vader's leash". She probably had a point.

There's more than one joint chief, but only one chairman. I think that's what you meant.

I don't think Vader actually fits into any sort of heirarchy. He does what he wants and his only obedience is to the emperor. But I do think he does what Tarkin asks because he respects him.

yeah, I meant chairman of the joint chiefs. Since that is an actual Field Marshal level position it is odd to me that isn't a five star rank.

Tarkin was in command but Vader was the muscle. The emperor knows that Vader is too unstable so he prefers the leadership skills of Tarkin.
