Couple of (Relatively) New Houston Area BBQ Joints

1) The Witt Pit Rosenberg, TX
Ate there recently. Had brisket, ribs, and sausage. Very solid BBQ. I would compare it to the Lockhart joints in quality. Would gladly go again.
2) Ate at The Pit Room in Houston after returning from the far east (to purge my innards). I usually agree with Daniel Vaughn on his reviews and who gave this joint good reviews. But it was among the worst I've ever eaten. Had brisket, spare ribs, and beef sausage. The brisket was ok - certainly salvageable. The spare ribs need to be taken off the menu until it's fixed. Way over rubbed and not fall off-the-bone, nor even tear off-the-bone. More like tug with all your might and hope. The beef sausage was bland and noticeably dry. Almost every thing I've seen 'in print' elsewhere raves about The Pit Room but this was my experience. No intent to return.

Had Killen's STQ tonight. Part steakhouse, part BBQ or smoke themed items. Got the beef short rib and ended up having my 7 yr old daughter eat almost half. If you can grab a reservation do it.

You're out of your fricking mind, The Pit Room is some of the best BBQ in the state.

No it's not. It's not even in the same league as the better joints in TX.
Like to see you try to eat the ribs and sausage they sold me.

I do...just about every weekend since they've been open so far.
The fact that you referenced Lockhart in your original post tells me you still think Smittys and Blacks are putting out better than average BBQ. This isn't 2001.

There are over 2K BBQ joints in TX. I think most would rate Kreuz Market, Smitty's, and Black's as "better than average" in 2016. That you apparently don't comments more on you than those joints.
Zagat includes all 3 in their 34 best in TX. Daniel Vaughn had Black's and Kreuz Market in his 2013 top 50 list.
Zagat 2014
TMBBQ 2013 - update in work
FTR, in the OP I only stated that The Witt Pit in Rosenberg was comparable in quality to the Lockhart joints.
Back to The Pit Room. I noted that I have found Vaughn very reliable in his reviews and he gave it very good reviews. But I'm commenting on my experience and what I was served. And it should be criticized because it was bad. If I had taken what I got from The Pit Room and compared it to Killen's, Pecan Lodge, etc it was rookie league.
If your experience was different, do tell. But don't suggest I'm out of my mind because I declined to agree with you.

Been to The Pit Room twice now and loved it both times. In my opinion, their BBQ was awesome and the other stuff (Tacos, chili, etc.) was great as well.
By no means do I consider myself a BBQ connoisseur or foodie in general, but I thought the Pit Room was fantastic, especially for the location. Much better than the Lockhart BBQ I've had.
While I generally agree with offshoreangler and often support his opinions, I personally wouldn't go so far to write off Killen's entirely yet. Granted, I've only been to Killen's once. However, for now, given the location of the Pit Room, the barrier to entry is much lower, and I'm immensely more likely to frequent the Pit Room than Killens.

Pit Room has been great every time I've gone. Ribs cooked great, jalapeño cheddar sausage is fantastic and the brisket can definitely hang with Killens, Pecan Lodge, La Barbecue. I also dig their pickle/jalapeño/pickled garlic bar.
I did do Killens last week on a Tuesday -- short line and everything was killer, brisket, ribs and pork belly.
Anyone been to Pinkerton's on Airline? Think it just opened up. Guy my age started it up, haven't heard much about the grub.

Been to both the Pit Room and Witt Pit recently.
Pit room was awesome on my visit. Got the ribs and tasted the brisket from a coworker. Best area BBQ I've eaten.
Witt Pit is closer to my hood. They were out of the ribs when we went, so I ate the brisket. It was good, but a tad salty. Green beans seemed very salty.
Still liked it better than some of the other area BBQ I've had. If they'd tone down slightly on the sodium (and I do tend to like my BBQ on the salty side), they would be even better.
I like the nice outdoor, quieter setting of Witt Pit, but liked Pit Room food a bit more.
