Let's Talk Daniel Day-Lewis American Accent

Why recently has he had such a strange, almost cartoonish American accent when playing one.
The only American accent that sounds real or natural is the one he uses in Last of the Mohicans... It's basically perfect, but every other time they're all pretty outlandish and seem forced.
Lincoln, just strange
Plainview - way over the top cartoonish
Bill the Butcher - even more strange and cartoonish than Plainview, almost didn't even sound American.

Seriously? Five Points in New York City in the mid 19th century? With all the recently arriving immigrants that is not going to sound like people talk now, even an "American". I thought he did a great job with the accent.

Can you imagine Bill the Butcher with a limey British accent or a southern twang? His accent was perfect for that movie.

He's a great character actor and he's playing caricatures in There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York. You don't have to play straight all the time.
