Yeah, I'm not sure of the details of his particular contract, but typically buyouts are contingent on finding another job. This is why buyouts never seem to be an issue when coaches switch jobs, as the buyout is really just rolled into the new higher salary.
In practice the buyout figure is essentially an earnings floor, so let's say he is scheduled to make $1M a year from his buyout for 5 years; he gets a job making $500k, LSU is now responsible for a he other $500k. If he makes $1.5M, LSU wouldn't owe anything unless there are guarantees which I'm sure there are.
All of my hear little things can stall a negotiation on the front end. That is why when you hear done deal, proceed with caution. The agreement might be made in principal, but incentives are not actually hashed out. I assume this is where things went wrong with Jimbo this year.
