My issue on this whole thing is the "fake news" label.
I don't want to be told by any news outlet that something is "fake" without it actually being confirmed. Say that it's a "rumor" or it's "unconfirmed". Even that it's "likely false."
But don't say something is fake or false unless you know for sure.
I have no problem with them ignoring the issue completely. Just don't report on it. But, if something rises to the level where they feel obligated to call it "false" they need to verify that it is false.

to be fair that's basically like asking them to prove a negative

i'd rather start a GFM to have me investigate the "racist note" incident at LSU
even though i think that's dead. DEAD
even though i think that's dead. DEAD

I agree that biased news sources labeling stuff fake without investigation is potentially problematic, and that the fake news label in general is concerning.
But what do you do about situations on this, where the story is very likely a fabrication of bored internet junkies? And what do you do about places like Breitbart, which knowingly publishes misleading or outright false information, but also publishes real stuff that MSM won't (MSM also does this to some extent)?
I'm not interesting in labeling Breitbart as fake news, but it's certainly in the business of misleading the public, just like MSM sources.

Maybe, but they should probably use words like "uncorroborated" or "alleged" rather than "fake". That insinuates that they have investigated and proven it to be completely false (which it doesn't sound like they have).

oh yeah "fake news" is just the latest MSM-DEM talking point
it's so transparent
it's so transparent

I'd give to it. The fact that that chick hasn't said word one about the incident since it happened is extremely odd.

I think I'm fine if they just call it a conspiracy theory. Calling it a false conspiracy theory implies certainty that isn't there. It's a conspiracy theory, it's promoted by weirdos, and it's very likely partially or largely inaccurate, which are aspects I think people generally accept about most CTs.
"uncorroborated" would give it a little more oomph than it deserves, I think.

we need a hero to step up and get those hallway tapes from the apt complex and we need a handwriting expert on deck

Would be F. King esque for them to have found out she made it all up and rather than make it public/kick her arse out, they opted to tell her to stand down.

yeah usually those are "tent pole" issues to push the victim to prominence
she obviously doesn't want the story to stay alive, which is odd

No, it's not at all. But you prove my point. False is definitive. Fake is definitive. If you've done NO investigation, don't use a definitive. If you feel it is a bullshite rumor beneath your investigative journalism standards, then ignore it. But once you rise to calling it fake, you are obligated to investigate.
(I don't care about this story. This issue is much bigger. The media calling stories they don't like "fake" without investigation is complete bullshite and should not be tolerated)

Actually, you're obligated to investigate before you call it fake.

it absolutely is
let's just assume for this discussion it's totally fake. this isn't "manufactured". it's "Fake"
how does the media find evidence that it's fake if there is no evidence either way?

i agree that there should be some real investigation into it
and the "fake news" meme is just a DEM-MSM talking point and should not be tolerated

I would guess you'd feel differently if "unconfirmed" reports came out that you were a rapist of children. I'd be suing the hell out of somebody.

She knew the longer it stayed in the spotlight, the more scrutiny it would get.
I'd be willing to bet that a lot of time was spent planning that so there were no witnesses and hardly any evidence to prove it was fabricated. She knew that the political climate at the time insured there would be no intense questioning of her potential involvement.

it just doesn't make sense to spend all that time and effort and not really capitalize on it
