Dozier is an awesome player. Pitching prospects are so volatile.

Anyone have any Rule 5 draft thoughts? I really hope Cordoba doesn't stick with the Padres.

ETA: It looks like the Reds picked up Eunice native Stuart Turner from the Twins.

Its amazing to me how a "dying sport" according to the media can pay their players so much money

The guy has immense, immense natural talent, but $17 million a year (and a five year commitment) for a guy that's going to make between 60-70 appearances? I'm not sure that is justifiable outside of an analysis that consists of it is the Yankees and money doesn't matter to them.

I think the argument is just that it isn't really America's Pastime anymore, as football has overtaken it as the more popular sport. It's obviously still a massively profitable sport.

The one thing in defense of giving relievers these kind of deals is that I think it's become apparent what a huge advantage a guy like Chapman can give you in the postseason. I think it's safe to assume the Yankees will be back in the postseason in the next three years. Not saying I totally agree with it but it seems like one of the few things that becomes quite a bit more valuable come postseason time vs during the regular season.

Now a team like the Marlins possibly spending that makes zero fricking sense to me

That is true, but the effectiveness of relievers is so random. Chapman has been basically brilliant, that's true, but I remember when Joe Nathan was unhittable, or Gagnet, or Papelbon, or Marmol. The Yanks were spoiled with having Mo be amazing forever, but outside of him, I don't really know of anyone else who had that kind of staying power. Maybe Chappy is that guy. Who knows?

The Rule 5 is you can not be on the 40 man and not under 18 previous June with how many years of service?

Isn't it to prevent teams from stockpiling players in the minors?

Yankees are going to have very little commitment come 2018 winter. Its going to be amazing watching them buy every star out there. I'd love for them to offer Kershaw 40 mil per year to steal him from the dodgers

If you were drafted 18 or under then you become Rule 5 eligible after 5 years.

If you were drafted at age 19+, then you become Rule 5 eligible after 4 years.

Yea, it's a way to prevent teams from stockpiling keeping talented players in the minors.

It's a good example of the positive side of the Eaton deal. That contract allows them to do this. Had they had the Eaton deal done a week ago they almost certainly would've resigned Melancon.

Not arguing that it wasn't an overpay prospect-wise.

Best news of the offseason thus far.....Rangers third base coach Tony Beasley is officially cancer free

Other Texas news, we snatched Houston's RHP Michael Hauschild in Rule 5 today.

EDIT: Huaschild has a career 3.5 ERA. He's been in minors since 2012 when Houston took him in the 33rd round of the draft.

Also, don't know if it's been mentioned, but Chapman's deal has a no-trade clause for all teams in California.

What's the significance (if known) of California? Obviously, the most likely to pay 17 million for a closer would be LAA and LAD. Anything more to it than that?

Just saw that the ESPN baw corrected his tweet, it's not only California teams, it's west coast teams in general.

Must be a time and tax thing?

Joking aside maybe his family is in FL and he wants to be able to control if he's on the other side of the country from them or something
