ASVAB Test Results...question?

My step-son (17 years old) just took ASVAB for the 1st time and scored 81. I wasn't in the military and don't know how this score stacks up. He wants to join Air Guard to help pay for college and med school. I know certain scores will help him land better jobs after he finishes boot camp. He wants to be an MD. (We were told he didn't score very well with the mechanical questions.)
Is 81 any good?
TIA.

ASVAB Fact Sheet
So he did as well or better than 81%
quote:
My AFQT score is 62. What does this mean? AFQT scores are reported as percentiles between 1-99. An AFQT percentile score indicates the percentage of examinees in a re ference group who scored at or below that particular score. For current AFQT scores, the reference group is a sample of 18 to 23 year old youth who took the ASVAB as part of a national norming study conducted in 1997. Thus, your AFQT score of 62 indicates th at you scored as well as or better than 62% of the nationally-representative sample of 18 to 23 year old youth.
So he did as well or better than 81%

I got a 98 and I really didn't take the test that seriously.
Not bragging just saying that 81 isn't very good. That being said, if he maxed out some sections and just sucked at one that could have bearing on his opportunities.

set up a tour with the LANG down in Belle Chasse, unless he is a complete doorknob he'll know what his job will be before he even goes to basic, maintaining Eagles while going to school wouldn't be a bad gig

81 is pretty decent. The ASVAB is actually on a percentile scale so only 18% of people who took it did better than him. You can't get a 100. An 81 easily gets him into any branch of the military and qualifies for most jobs. The ASVAB is also split into 2 parts. That 81 is the academic part, but there is also a potential job score but the academic part is by far the most important. If he wants to be a nuke(work on nuclear reactors in the navy) that score will get him in the door, but he will need to either improve his score or take some additional tests. A nuke in the Navy is the best enlisted job in the military.

81 is a good score, but like others have said job placement options is determined by the GT score. Anything over 110 on GT is great.

81 is a good score to the recruiter, anything above a 50 is. It's considered an "Alpha", or quality applicant.
As a test score, it's also pretty good. The raw score (AFQT- Armed Forces Qualification Test) determines whether or not he can join. The line scores qualify him for specific jobs. It's impossible to know what he qualifies for without knowing the required lines scores of the job he wants and what scores he has. Most jobs only pull from 3 to 4 line scores (if that) of the 10 to 11 (can't remember) that the ASVAB has.

I wouldn't worry about his mechanical score for MD
he needs to worry about getting at least 3.85 gpa preferably a 4.0
at least a 32 on the mcat i suppose

Just a Pro-Tip(s) for his experience in Lackland AFB.
When the TI asks him why he joined the military, the correct answer is "To protect and defend the Constitution of the USA", or "to serve my country". Not money for college, benefits or job experience.
Do not volunteer for anything, you will be assigned what you need to do. Basic training is not the place to be a leader or a hero. It will cause more grief than it is worth.

Sir, I am retired from the USAF and was the Operations officer at a recruiting squadron for 3 years. Yes, 81 is a very good score. Unless he bombed on one of the subdivisions of the test he should qualify for just about any job the air force has to offer.
You said he wanted to be an MD. I assume you don't mean "doctor" as you also mentioned his mechanical scores.
In any case good luck to your son, the air force was a fricking blast. Best years of my life.

How good of shape is he in?
B/c I know the perfect job that would be perfect for helping him becoming a medical professional while getting some bad arse training.

I am not sure how accurate this is but it may be worth a view by your son.

My cousin was a Marine recruiter and said they struggled to find people who could do over a 50. This was Mississippi though.
