How does buying a phone off ebay work with my carrier?

In the past 15 or so years of having a cell phone, I've only ever bought from the plan provider. I have no been switched to the NEXT plan yet with ATT because I'm still grandfathered in with my unlimited data plan. I'd like to purchase a new iPhone without adjusting my plan. If I buy online or from a store, what do I need to do in order for that phone to work for my number? I'm cell phone illiterate so pretend like I'm 5 when explaining.

All you have to do is pop in your sim card from your old device to new device. Go to swappa.com to find you a ATT device.

As long as it is an att compatible phone and you have a newer 4g sim card you are good to go. You may have to trim your existing sim to fit, but that can be done with a sim cutter off Amazon or with some scissors and a file

I have a similar issue. Seller says:
I then ask about just putting my sim in it because I don't understand. He says,
Can someone explain this to me? May be moot since the phone did not come in today.

I just went into my Google Project Fi account and while this phone is showing deactivated, it's still showing as registered to my account. Two weeks ago I requested Google to charge my credit card the balance to pay the phone off and remove it from my account. Unbeknownst to me, the payoff isn't immediate. Instead it happens on the billing cycle date. Well, my date is next Tuesday, 11/22. It looks like the phone will reach you on Monday, so it's not going to be able to be activated until Tuesday
I then ask about just putting my sim in it because I don't understand. He says,

The way I understand it is the phone EIN has to be released from the current provider before a new provider activates the phone.
Can someone explain this to me? May be moot since the phone did not come in today.

Just make sure it says "unlocked GSM". And don't buy an "international" phone because they use different bands.
T mobile and att (along with the rest of the world) use GSM tech. If it is unlocked, you out in your sim, and you are in business.
In other words, Google unlocked GSM phone and you got your options.
