You wouldn't be able to afford a standing mercenary army. No one could. Hence why mecenary armies were infamous for switching sides during battles.

It can be done over time.
I also never said get rid of the morals. Just tell the people that these priests and popes do not need your money to get into heaven

Just got finished reading about a beloved Middle Ages dictator (not a King) who said the same thing and when he was excommunicated and the city threatened with interdiction, the entire populace including the army and his guards promptly burned him alive. You don't get away with messing with the church before the printing press

Raise an army and keep it well fed, well stocked with rum and ale, and well supplied with wenches.

Then I go forth and conquer the fricking hell out of everything.

Arthur's death had to happen for him to take the throne but in the end, did it really matter if Catherine consummated with him? No one seriously believed Henry's marriage was invalid and there was scant legal authority to annul it in any case. Henry was always going to make a way to annul it regardless. You think the consummation question really mattered?

daughter Elizabeth ran into feedback from neighbor Catholics:

thus

1. Mary Queen of Scots' Catholic peeps' assassination attempt fizzled when the murder weapon did not fire at point blank range.
2. Spain armada. very lucky. there was a storm.

how soon after E I was the civil war? maybe 20 years.

I guess if you just look at the one king's reign it worked out.

Well, that all depends on too many factors to list:
How educated are my peasants?
Do I have internal enemies?
What's my military's strength relative to my neighbors?
Do I have ocean access with a decent port?
What are my Naval resources?
What are my natural resources?
Has the Stirrup been invented yet?
Are my kids retards?
Do I have Muslim, Viking, or Mongol armies encroaching on my territory?
Are my borders naturally defensible?
Do I have onagers? Trebuchet's? Ballista?
Has gunpowder been invented yet?

Not the act itself, but Henry's reliance on Biblical authority relating to it definitely was a big deal in getting his primary advisors, especially Wolsey and later Cranmer on board.

Right, but it was all just a charade to get the annulment. I figure Henry would have simply come up with some other flimsy excuse. Wolsey was too intelligent to really believe Henry's case. Cranmer was a sycophant.

Easy, I'd consult the OT on how best to rule. All men would be given free truck nuts, ExOfficio boxers, Yeti coolers, and permission to PIIHB. All women would receive instruction in the fine art of sammich making.

Vastly? I dont know. What was so different in Henry's time to allow him to getaway with it?
The populace was intensely religious and deeply Catholic. He had bellicose nobles to deal with. A primitive economy. Unlike medieval kings, he had a parliament to deal.
There was the printing press, That was different.

I would immediately begin an "Apology Tour", mention that I wanted to be on the "right side of history" until people became physically ill, bow to tyrants and opponents, tax all my subjects and give the money to these other groups, and disavow all the historical achievements of my kingdom. Like we do now. Before The God Emperor made us great again.

After the Catholic Queen and King died in Spain, they really went to shite and became a joke, they could have been the most powerful kingdom on earth for centuries.
