i've recently realized that i really dont like what i do as a sales rep. for a medical company, and ive always like geology. im 33 and thinking about going back to school for geology. any suggestions or insight? what's the market like for geology grads, and what should i expect entering the workforce as a entry level grad at 36-37?

I knew a guy who graduated with a degree in geology. He is now living in bumfrick Oklahoma driving around from well to well absolutely miserable.

Be the kind that hunts for fossils. That would be awesome.

If you're going back to school, get your arse in the medical field.

Right now the job market is down. I'm a geologist working in environmental consulting and the job market is flooded with petroleum workers. I was lucky enough to have a friend get me a job before oil was completely down.

It will take you 2 years of undergrad and 2 years of grad school to get a degree that will get you into the biz at the level you want.
If you think the biz will tebound in that time, you should enroll.

In medical sales you can make 100-150 in the right job. I can't imagine a geologist making half of that. Maybe you can work part time as a sales rep to fund a geology hobby.
Thats not really what you asked though. Four years are going to pass, you can either be a geologist or not at the end of it.

You'll be in the O&G industry and outlook not great now but in a few years it will be. You'll make more as a medical sales rep imo.

the market is not good at the moment, but by the time you get your degree, the oil field should be back well enough
most geologist I know work directly for O&G or as a consultant

Not sure about geologists in general, but the petroleum geologists I work with regularly are taking it pretty hard right now

Literally everyone I graduated with that got a degree in geology (I personally do not) are looking for jobs in GIS, not geology. The best geology jobs require a phD

As a O/G geologist, the times are obviously very tough right now. I've been fortunate enough to keep working but know lots of people that have been forced out. But, there will eventually be a high demand again.
To get hired in O/G: go to an O/G school (UT, TAMU, CSM, OU, LSU), get a Master's degree (preferably related to O/G), have high GPA, do Imperial Barrel Award competition, have 1 or more internships and knock your project out of the park - get these at job fairs (at your school and AAPG-SEG Student Expo, Rocky Mountain Rendezvous) & develop presentation skills.
