My stepdad's father flew P-47's in the Pacific. I wanted to get him a scale model painted just like his dad's plane but I have absolutely zero experience and want it to look good.

Is there anywhere around the area that will do this sort of thing through contract?

Pretty simple paint scheme really:

two kinds of kids made models. The ones who put it together first then painted and it looked sloppy, or the ones that painted every piece and then put it together and then touched it up so it looked good.

I was the former, lol.

There are plenty of on-line manufacturers who can make replica model airplanes true to your specs.

I have an exact replica of each plane I flew during my corporate days.

If you just want to get him a nice model that's generally accurate, try ebay for pre-painted wooden models and die cast models. Wooden ones come fully painted and run ~150 and make perfect desktop or cabinet displays. There are even completely pre-painted plastic and metal kits and go together very easily.

If you want accuracy you'll need to know the exact model he flew and commission a modeler to build one. Your dad may even remember the exact squadron markings, plane numbers, customized insignia etc to recreate his exact plane. P-47 models varied visually in ww2, and a good modeler will know and pick the right kit to use.

Check with "Baton Rouge Scale Modelers". They have a web page and facebook. I'm certain that one of the guys in there would be more than willing to help you out.

The P-47 in the OP is the exact squadron. The only difference between his plane and that one is the name on the nose.

With today's graphics technology, it is very likely that markings/decals for the exact tail numbers and nose art can be obtained. If you have any actual photos of the plane, make sure you show them to the person who builds it.

If you have trouble getting in touch with someone or finding someone to do it, let me know at boud reaux35 at gmail.

Scale modeling
Not now but I will in my "golden years", God willing.

I've been involved in my work life with some arcane but (to me) interesting one-off transportation & construction-related projects which will lend themselves well to scale modeling from scratch.

Once I start that, y'all won't have me to kick around here anymore.

There's a group of scale modelers that meets, does displays, and workshops with the EBR library system. Contact the main or Jones Creek branch and they should be able to get you in touch.
The members may do commissions as well.

Edit: I think I was beaten to the punch on that one.

My room at the house I grew up in probably has 50 or more of these I built.

I have practically every armored vehicle that existed in WW2

Tamiya models = GOAT

I was a lonely kid

And the third kind: those who got half way through, put it back in the box and never touched it again. Like me

I used to build them, now I just read about them, there is a subreddit called: modelmakers

There are several guys who will make what you want.

I made a model for my great uncle when I was a kid, he took part in the Battle of Britain in a Spitfire, all he could remember was his Squadron had a C on the side of his plane.
