re: Who is the better drummer: Lars Ulrich (Metallica) or Danny Carey (Tool)?

I said in this thread Lars was right for Metallica. The argument is dumb - Danny Carey is light years ahead in ability. No reasonable person disputes that.
Perhaps. I really dislike Tool, so that is no doubt coloring my answer. But the video you posted wasn't anything special.
Ability? What is that? Literal pure technical ability? Or the ability to be perfect in a song and make the drums more than just a timepiece? I do not agree that it is obvious that Carey is better than Ulrich in that regard. I find that Carey likes to throw in a lot of prog rock tropes into his playing (e.g. little flourishes on the hi hat between the beat) that are technically competent but come off more like masturbation than actually adding to the song.

I enjoy that song, the drums on it - the video shows his ability to keep time, keep the beat, tuck the right stick, grab the gong mallet - his great use of bronze (yeah, he is a jazz and progressive influenced drummer, but he takes it to the next level).

Nobody in this thread has anything positive to say about Lars so I don't know how he's overrated.

Saw Metallica a few months ago in Minnesota. Saw TOOL last night. Hands down Danny. Is this a fricking joke?

Dude, I absolutely despised King's X, but I could recognize the massive amount of talent concentrated therein.
(I still can't listen to them, just not my thing)
Lars and Danny can't be compared unless by analogy IMO:
Lars:K. Richards as Danny:Gilmour
That pretty much sums it up from a guitarist POV.

LOL at this thread. Danny is far better

The question should simply be is Lars a good drummer. He was decent in the 80s and 90s, now he basically throws some sticks at a drum kit. A much as I hate that little bastard most Metallica songs wouldn't exist as is without him. Hetfield is the heart and soul but his vocals and riffs needed piecing together and Lars did it perfectly.

Danny Carey is a drum legend. Period. Can't wait to see him in action Saturday night.
We were going to go see TOOL at Voodoo but did not make it. Busy work week for me and the wife and decided to pass at the last minute.
Missed them again!
Later Dude.
Hope all is well.
Still helping people recover from the unexpected.

Just came in here to say that Tool was amazing last night and this is a dumb conversation.

I love Metallica to death. Great guitarists, great bassists, OK drummer. Lars isn't a bad drummer. For what Metallica is, he's created some good beats. I don't know anything about drumming, but the way he plays, he looks to have very simple beats. It's not very complex. Then again, who am I to talk. But still, he's fast, but he's not technical. He is just a generic drummer. He just doesn't hold up a candle to other drummers that are better.
Danny Carey is a different story. I love Tool as much as I love Metallica, and Carey is 1000x better on the drum than Ulrich. Why? Different time signatures, fast rhythmic drumming, hell it looks impossible to cover one of his songs. He has some sort of supernatural skill to him that allows him to play drums perfectly.
He has been playing the drums since he was 10 years old, and spent his life perfecting his instrument, compared to Ulrich who started when he was 16, and hasn't seemed to care about the drums as much after the Napster incident. Danney Carey is the best drummer in the world, but unfortunately Tool just isn't as well known as Metallica is.

Without a doubt he's a better, more versatile, and more technical drummer. Lars is a good metal drummer. But I've never heard him do anything else.
Though being a Louisiana based board, I'm going to say screw the OP, and say Stanton Moore is better than both.

Helleuva bump.
I'm disappointed though because I thought MizzouKills was back.

I'd argue that Gavin Harrison is #1, but Carey is definitely in a pretty small Tier 1. Lars is someone around Tier 5. He's not even in Tier 1 of thrash metal drummers. He doesn't sniff Igor Cavalera, for instance.

Holy shitbump, Batman. I apologize for my participation.
