found a 1/2 ton big horn Quad Cab 4 x 4 for 38k, salesman told me if I wait till December I can get it for 35k with an extra 3500 added to my trade in case I'm upside down.
Talk me out of buying this truck!

You'll be driving a RAM. Convincing enough?

It's $38k. Shop hard enough and you can find a 3/4 ton 4x4 ram diesel for that price.

don't need anything that big, just looking at 1/2 ton and midsize pickups that'll pull at least 7k lbs, but I don't wanna pay the same price for less truck.
what do you think is a good price for the truck I described?

fair point, the GMC's are more attractive, but also +10k for what I want, don't want that note. Dad's put 250k on a couple rams since I was a kid with nothing but regular maintenance and water pump replacements, so I know they'll hold up.

I have one. 30,000 flawless miles so far. Average 28 on the highway, but have seen low 30s.

Dodge's are the most repaired truck on the market. Just because it has a diesel doesn't mean things won't break. This diesel is not a Cummings but built by a subsidiary of Fiat in Italy. Even if the engine turns out to be durable you still have the Fact that FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automotive) are the low price purchaser of parts of any OEM out there. So power steering systems, ABS brakes, Air Conditioning, Info/Audio systems, etc, are expensive and time consuming to repair. Buy and extended warranty and hope the vehicle they put you in is a good replacement vehicle with similar capabilities.

If its close to being upside down, don't buy another, it's rarely a smart move.

yeah, I won't if I am. but I own a car right now and it's very inconvenient when I want to do anything other than drive around the city or the highway.

I have the 4wd Lone Star edition. I bought it from Gillman in Houston last year. I got it for $37 which was way less than anyone else.

I think Rams are the best looking trucks on the market right now, that's all I got.

According to the market $35 would be a good price for the truck you are looking at.
If you like it (and can afford it) than get it. They're supposedly good vehicles. Dodge/Ram/Chrysler traditionally are less reliable than Ford/Chevy but I personally don't believe it's that big of an issue. The new HD rams that I've looked at appear to be very well built from a quick overview.
Be sure you educate yourself on scheduled maintenance and the costs associated before buying. Those are hidden costs that can be extremely high on diesels in some cases and absolutely cannot be cheaped out on. I'm not familiar with the fiat diesel but it's undoubtably more expensive to operate than a gasser. If it's belt-timed than it will need a timing belt probably around 100k miles and that can be an expensive service. Don't write it off just based on this post, but do your homework and know full well what those costs are before final negotiations.

Thanks for the info, I'm definitely researching as much as possibly before I make any purchase.
I like the diesel for towing/torque, but like I said I've never owned one so I don't know about all the maintenance costs associated. Appreciated!

Just educate yourself, put the numbers down over how long you're planning to keep it, and go from there.
Just for a frame of reference, scheduled maintenance on my Volkswagen diesel is about $250-300 every 10k miles. If it were an automatic there would be a ~$700 additional service at 80k miles and there's a ~$900 timing belt change at 120k. When the exhaust filter clogs up (likely around 160k with my driving) it will be around $2000 to replace. If the high pressure fuel pump shits, that'll be well into the thousands to replace. Should never happen with proper maintenance but shite can happen just like every other vehicle.
I'm not trying to shy you or anyone away from diesels. The engines currently on the market are incredible across the board. Just be sure to do your homework and balance the cost.

Being on a tow truck constantly improves your mileage

The added fuel milage will not offset the extra upfront cost of the diesel engine and the additional operating expense of a diesel---oil changes, urea, ect. PLUS most of the times these days diesel cost more than gas.
The torque of the small diesel does not offset the horsepower of a gas in the 5.7 liter range if pulling a trailer is your concern.
The best truck reliability wise on the road today is a Toyota.
