re: "Coach O pushing all the right buttons." **UPDATED**

What I think this brief O tenure has shown is WE DO HAVE THE TALENT, they just need to be allowed to play. Let them do what they are good at. I'm sure you could pull most every coach in college football in, and without getting in the player's way, would have success.

O rested his injury instead of running him hurt like Less

Hugh Freeze was Orgeron's TE coach, and was not an OC until 2010. But carry on...
Oh wow. You really are slow. Where did I mention Freeze at all? Try Dan Werner.

Was a desperate attempt to keep his job.

If you look back at the top new coaches hired in 2011, you had names like:
Al Golden
Brady Hoke
Jerry Kill
Randy Edsall
Addazio
Shaw
David Shaw has been the only hire that has stuck.
These guys were coordinators too,
In you list, look at the tenure, it isn't like those guys are available with exception to Herman or Fisher...and shite, two years ago Miles was on that list too!
There are about 20 new coaches hired each year, the odds of getting one that will be in the Top 10 on any list of great coaches is damn slim. Especially since 1 and 2 are taken, and looks like Peterson, Swinner, and Petrino will cement themselves in there too.
You're missing the point. Sure, past OC/DC's fail as HC all the time. But it's VERY obvious that if you want and elite HC, it's better to hire a guy with a specialty that can run one side of the ball with positive results.

Please name me 3 ELITE head coaches in college football. (Harbaugh can maybe be included at the end of the season. You aren't elite if you've never won it all)
ETA: I'll just finish it for you since you are reading up on Dan Werner right now. There aren't 3. You have Saban, Meyer, then a bunch of good, not elite, coaches.
You are trying to recreate Saban and Meyer. The qualities that make a coach great don't always match up and aren't always the same.

My bad, i only read about 10% of what you guys post.
So what you are saying is that Werner is successful now, but he wasn't with he coached with O?
hmm

I'm saying it looks like O has shown he can make good hires. While at Ole Miss, he probably did too much wrong for that to matter, but he hired Freeze and Werner who are both great offensive minds.
Sooooo I'm not worried about his hiring abilities.

This is spot on and the reason so many are dead set against Coach O. In the SEC, there are going to be 2-3 games each year that it will take more than great talent or "letting coaches coach" to win those games. You will need a head coach who can strategize on an elite level. Those 2-3 games each year separate the great teams from the middle of the pack. LSU has not had a coach on that level since Saban, but they have the chance to get one now. To hire O is to say we are fine with being a team on the upper tier of the middle of the pack. That was were Miles had the team before his stubbornness led to them sinking toward the bottom. Sorry, but I want more than being 2nd place every year. I want a coach who at least gives the team a chance to be SEC or even national champs. Coach O will never be able to do that because he brings nothing to the table in pure coaching ability. He doesn't even want to be a defensive coordinator and I suspect this is the reason why. He is good for motivating and recruiting, both of which he can do just fine as a D line coach. There is absolutely no reason to make him head coach.

quote:No, I get it. But given that coordinator experience has been and will continue to be skewed because that is the progression hirers of coaches want to see...of course all lists will be dominated by people that have been coordinators.
You're missing the point
10 percent of people on your list have no 'specialty', I would say that is consistent with the percentage of coaches that are hired without being a coordinator.

And why would the AD's want this?

Because he'd rather ruin that kids career than admit he needed to step down.
disgusting.
"great man"...what a joke.

Agreed. What we need to do is make sure we have a coach in place that can beat teams that have equal or better talent. Something les wasn't able to do in the few years.

calm the frick down
he had a sprained angle not a neck injury, and I am sure LF7 wanted to be out there.

I'm ok with that. I'd take a chance on trying to get the next Meyer/Saban and failing rather than settling on a coach that has no chance to ever touch what those two have accomplished.
