Dr. Baker won't let him suffer. He'll be put down in a humane fashion at the appropriate time.

I don't know why this makes me so sad but it really has affected my mood. He really was playful. Much more so than his predecessor. I will miss him. I hope they do something to honor him at the game. Does anyone know if his parents are still alive?

I always wondered if these captive tigers are used to humans enough to be domesticated or still would maul you to death.

Asking from a distance.

No I wonder the same thing. I mean he's in his night house so how do they get close enough to tend to him? I'm just curious. And crying again. I feel like a 47 yo big fat cry baby.

Plenty large predators are friendly with humans. Theyre still a wild animal and more powerful than most people realize. An animal his size just 'playing' with you can still do serious damage. And if he does snap, you would be dead in a few seconds if he wanted to maul you

I think somebody here at TD originally posted this photo. It's always been my favorite.

Mike's habitat is always the first place we stop when we visit Baton Rouge. This has been harder on my kids than I would have thought, but then it was two years ago this month that we lost my mom to cancer. The word "hospice" continues to have a very painful effect on us all.

I was at LSU for Mike IV and Mike V, and of course they passed away, but not from cancer as far as I know.

When somebody (or in this case a Tiger) you love dies from this terrible illness, it reminds you of everybody else you've loved who has died from it, so many good people gone too soon.

Sad indeed. My thoughts go out to his staff. The ladies standing behind the podium when they made the announcement looked exhausted, but they presented themselves with strength and dignity, far better than I could have done in those circumstances.

Safe Travels, Mike.

As someone who has been in the room holding my dog when he was put down, I have great empathy for the people who have to do this. It's just heartbreaking.

Feeling extremely sad over this....Mike V was there when I was in school, and Mike VI came when I was a senior. He is such a special Tiger, and as an animal lover, you just hate to see something like that happen to such a special animal. I know he will be at peace, and his caretakers know what's best for him. Praying for a peaceful road to the Rainbow Bridge...
