I thought it was great. One of the best movies of the year.

Actually, I'd say the second best one I've seen this year. After Hell or High Water

Should be a mandatory rule to put the date of the movie you're talking about in the thread title. Movies have been around for over 120 years now and the names of them have ran out so almost every new movie is the name of a previous movie.

Man... the critics who where praising this film after Sundance are now tempering their enthusiasm. And now that it bombed out of it's first weekend (6th place at $7 Mill), almost all of the Oscar talk is disappearing.

I've never seen such a quick about-face on a film's prospects.

When they started intertwining their ads with BLM, it pretty much guaranteed I'll never watch it.

The director's alleged rape background killed this film. The studios were falling over each other to distribute this movie. Now they've got black women outside the theaters protesting it.

what i find hilarious is that the story of his penn state case was brought to light by black ladies on twitter that are mad that he married a white chick.

Almost entirely due to the details of the rape allegations against Nate Parker and the fact his accuser later committed suicide. This is a political film, but Parker found himself without any troops to rally. He became too toxic, and thus so did his film.

LINK

Right now, who wants to be seen as supporting a "rapist who got away with it" in Hollywood? Especially because he's a new player and doesn't have a reservoir of contacts and goodwill. It's easier to cut him loose and distance from him entirely.

NOTE: I haven't seen the film, so I can't comment on its quality. I'm just speculating on the political atmosphere of the movie industry leading to the movie's critical and commercial failure.

This bumps up Denzel's chances for being nominated for Fences.

If anyone wants a good laugh, go to theRoot.com's Facebook page and look at the comments on the story about this movie flopping. It's all a conspiracy by the white patriarchy !

Has anyone in Hollywood denounced Roman Polanski lately?
