Florida was injury plagued at QB and D-line for this game. LSU was favored to win. That would give Florida 2 SEC losses. In order to reach the SEC Championship game with 2 conference losses, Florida would need Tennessee to lose 3 conference games. Unlikely with Tennessee's weak schedule after A&M/Alabama. If Tenn lost to A&M and Alabama, Florida would clinch the east with 1 conference loss.

If LSU were to win out they'd have a 6-1 conference record. If Alabama were to lose only to LSU, they would have a 7-1 conference record and would clinch the SEC West. We would need Alabama to lose 2 conference games in order to clinch with a 6-1 record.

you assume Tenn will lose 2 games in the SEC, it is obvious. Also, if you assume the SEC front office will rule in favor of the gumps over LSU in the event LSU wins out, again, it is obvious.

Assume and obvious do not belong together, obviously

I really don't see the difference. Thanks

If Florida and Tennessee each finish with one loss, then Tennessee advances whether Florida plays 7 games or 8 games since Tennessee would have both the head-to-head tie-breaker and the better winning percentage. Florida's SEC East chances are completely dependent on Tennessee losing more games than UF. Therefore, a cancellation is just as good as a victory but without the risk of losing.

With 8 conference games, LSU completely controls its own destiny against all teams but Auburn. With 7 games, Alabama and A&M also control their own destinies relative to LSU even with losses to LSU.

not playing will hurt Florida if they lose to Georgia in three weeks.

No incentive.
If Florida plays and wins they need UT to lose 2.
If Florida cancels they need UT to lose 2.
If Florida plays and loses they need UT to lose 3.

They're 7-1 and we're 6-1. Bama has higher winning %

But does that automatically mean Bama wins the tie-breaker? Really, there is no rule addressing the situation. The first tiebreaker would be who won in a head-to-head matchup. That would be LSU in this scenario. To stick Bama in ahead of LSU would be writing a rule into the tiebreaker rules that doesn't currently exist.

It isn't a tie. 7-1 is a better record than 6-1. The team with the best SEC record is the division winner. You don't need tiebreakers because there is a clear winner.
