My parents bought me one when i was a kid. I had 2 movies, "Harry & the Henderson's" and "Short Circuit."
I asked someone the other day if they had one and they had no idea what i was talking about.

Yup, had VHS and Betamax way back when.
Sony really fricked up on that one.

Yep. Friend that lived down the street had one, while we had a VHS. It always sucked when I'd spend the night at his house and his mom would take us to the video store to pick out a movie to rent. They always only had about 20 movies in Betamax, but tons of VHS.

Yes. We had one. Betamax was superior technology.

Betamax was superior. I never understood why they changed formats.
We had one, long before video rental. The only movies we had were bootleg copies of Star Wars and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Everything else we had was stuff we recorded off of TV.

8 ways porn influenced technology
quote:
The accessibility of porn on VHS killed Betamax During the 1970s, Betamax and VHS battled over which home viewing technology would reign supreme. While the wide format of Sony's Betamax made for better quality recordings, each tape only held 60 minutes of footage — as compared to the three hours of footage VHS held. That meant people couldn't tape their favorite movies on TV or experience three full hours of pornographic movies.
Sony toiled over the pornography issue, but ultimately decided against allowing smutty movies to be recorded onto the Betamax format. By the end of the 1970s, erotic films accounted for over half of all videotape sales in the United States, which meant people wanted to get their hands on VCRs, regardless of the fact they cost $800 back then.

Ah the good old days when it toke an arm and a leg to copy your favorite movie over to a blank tape . Man the struggle was real.
