Jones played in a different era, hard to compare stats, but he was the NFL MVP one year. I'd go out on a ledge and say he was the best QB we've ever had

Jones didn't have 3 first round picks as receiver and a dominant running game. But here is what is probably the greatest coach in NFL history with a top 5 all time QB in Brady had to say about Jones.
For those that didn't see Bert play football like I did, here is another gem from Bill Belichick on Jones. Keep in mind he just took a third string QB and a second string QB and about to go 4-0 without Brady. Dude knows more football than the Rant.
Read this. Here endeth your lesson.
In 1990, Jones participated in the first NFL quarterback challenge. He finished first in the retiree category and third in the regular competition (The regular competition taking the top three finishers from the alumni competition and adding them to the regular field of current QBs). Given his strong performance, Bobby Beathard, then the GM of the Chargers, wanted Jones to come out of retirement, but Jones was 39 at the time and chose not to try a comeback.[citation needed]
The widely respected scout Ernie Accorsi is quoted as saying that if Bert Jones had played under different circumstances, he probably would have been the greatest player ever.[citation needed] John Riggins has been quoted as saying Bert was the toughest competitor he has ever witnessed.[citation needed] On the eve of Super Bowl XLII New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, in discussing his choices for the greatest quarterbacks of all time, described Jones as the best "pure passer" he ever saw.[3]

You seem really invested in this topic. No one has doubted, at any time, that Bert Jones was one of if not the best QB LSU has ever had. You also are not the only poster to have seen Jones play. This entire thread was about arm strength, not how good different QBs were. You want to rely on passed down stories from 30-40 years ago that Bert Jones threw the ball a quarter mile. Let. It. Go. Yes, he had a very strong arm. No he did not throw the ball 100 yards.

Funny Bert Jones story:
My dad was a helicopter pilot, and for reasons I don't recall, he happened to be giving Jones a ride somewhere one day. I think this was in the late 80s, but not sure. Anyways, Bert was sitting co-pilot, and he mentioned to my dad that he had flown a little bit, so he asked if he could take the controls. My dad said "Sure, go for it." Needless to say, five seconds later, in a nose dive, Bert starts freaking out and yelling at my dad, "Take over! Take over!" My dad is just laughing. He said Bert was quiet as a mouse the rest of the flight.

Jamarcus...oh yeah, saw him throw 4 yards short of end zone on final play against Auburn....yeah he was a good one.
And then there was Jones to Davis...look that one up. It prompted the State Legislature of the Great State of Mississippi, ah say, Mississippi to put up a sign "Entering Lousiana, set your watches back 4 seconds".

If we are going on simply arm strength. I've got JaMarcus Russell first then Jaime Howard-then everybody else... Don't forget Howard had a legit 99 mph fast ball in High School and was drafted by the Braves.

2. Russell - 60 yards on a rope on his knees
A number of guys could do this. Lester Ricard (Amite, HS, who transferred to Tulane) could do it. Russell could throw it closer to 70.

Wow. So what you're saying is no where nobody that ever played any organized football could throw it like Russell?
Hell -Slash could chunk it 75-80 and Vick could easily throw it on he run 65. Seen him do it scrambling.
You guys really are limited to what you only see - purple and gold.
Jones and Russell are probably within a couple of yards either way and with wind, etc and the ball, are so close that maybe for an LSU QB there is no discernible difference. Come on with that "best in history" bull shite. Guys with much lesser equipment have chunked it a long as ways. Go watch the old film of Bradshaw hell even Favre or Fouts or Bough or Unitas or Nammath.

JRuss and there is very little to no difference in strength.
I'm sorry but youve lost your mind. JR has maybe the strongest arm in the history of football. Not just LSU. Bert Jones is number 2 at best.
And if have to see these goal line to goal line bombs to believe it. I believe the farthest throw in record is like 88 yards or something.
I would say...
JR
Bert
Mett
Harris
Rohan
Perriloux
Booty

Have to agree. JRuss arm strength was insane

He said that Bert Jones was the best "pure passer" that he'd ever seen, not the strongest arm.
