Would Tom Cruise be the most popular actor alive if not for Scientology?

Just read an article about Jonathan Lipnicki (the kid from Jerry Maguire), who said that Cruise still keeps in touch with him, gives him advice, etc. He also mentioned that Cruise always respected his Judaism and never pushed Scientology on him. Got me thinking, as huge a star as Cruise is, his reputation took a hit with the Katie Holmes divorce/Scientology/Oprah couch stunt. Did Scientology basically ruin his offscreen/IRL persona?

It did for a little while.
Then he did Tropic Thunder, Mission Impossible, and Edge of Tomorrow and reminded the world why he's one of the best

Well it's a cult that he is a pawn for that ruins lives and is incredibly evil so either way, frick that guy

Possibly in the conversation.

He still is the most popular actor alive. By all accounts he's a nice guy in his personal life too. The Scientology stuff holds him back a bit but I think most people are fine with it as long as he keeps it private.

He's probably my favorite actor. It's funny how so many will bitch and moan when someone won't see a movie because the lead actor is an outspoken liberal, but he gets bashed constantly because of belonging to a weird religion.

That's one incredible assumption to make by you. Evil is not exclusive to religion. Regardless of your religion or thoughts on reglion, you need to watch the "Going Clear" documentary on HBO and get back to me. They are frickin scum.

He's Muslim?

No, but his scientology beliefs and the negative impression of that cult has hurt him a bit.
Most popular actors, ignoring scientology:
Tom Hanks
Denzel Washington

I totally agree with him and I am agnostic. What say you now?

I dont do this. I'll watch a movie with Cruise if they interest me. But the ones he makes don't really peak my interest

Weird religion
This is not just some wacky religion, it causes actual harm on the people within it and threatens them to stay and to not speak out against them even when they leave. It's a fricking cult and a scary one because of the money they have flowing through it

He is "different" but his star power is dumb strong. Mission Impossible, Jack Reacher....shiiiiiiiit.

Isn't there a theory out there that Scientology members killed an actor for portraying L Ron Hubbard not in a good light in a movie?

I wouldn't be suprised by anything those creeps do.
Anyone who is in this thread downplaying them is uninformed.

I want to say the actor was Phillip Hoffman? I am sure I am not right though. I thought, but not sure, he was in the Master and he ended up dead.

True.
It's strongly implied that his character is based off of Hubbard.

He is one of the best on the planet with it.
But he is still a giant douchebag.

There's no way he'd be where he is without Scientology. Nobody can act that good with thetons running through their system.

Hell, it's entirely possible that scientology made him as famous as he is.
If you watch Going Clear, it's pretty clear that John Travolta would likely be a nobody if not for Scientology.
