The moment it files for church status.

Yea, this prosperity gospel is twisted though...getting people to equate prosperity as proof of annointing & hardship being that you're out of favor with God
If it was modern times, Jesus wouldn't of rode on a donkey...it would be an Escalade with spinners

The seeking of earthly possessions is the antithesis of Christian belief. Even if Osteen (and other preachers) are making their money from books, dvds, etc. they are still setting an example that personal financial success is the goal of life.
Hypothetically, what would people's opinion be in this thread if they found out most of these pastors that are wealthy give away 30-40% of their income? Obviously, I have no idea how much they are giving, just wondering if this would change the mindset of the thread.

For most pastors it's not the money that drives them it's the power and the extra arse they get on the side.

no problem with income obtained outside the church, but a pastor should not be making big money off church revenue/donations

The pastor of the local First Baptist church makes a little over $100k, and it's far from a megachurch.

A lot of hot chicks I know go to these places.
Dudes with unshaven beards and untucked shirts. Trucks and they bring their kids. It's not a 'sanctuary' it's a stage.
They have drums, a sound system and TV's. They whip you into a frenzy. Carpeting and low steps. Low lights, but spotlights on stage. The chicks all say 'it's about the message.' But they still give money.
And behind it all, some dude's making a fortune, banging a church secretary, and his wife is controlling the whole thing.

I have more of an issue with them building multiple campuses in an area, their pastors living in the same neighborhood as a D-1 Basketball coach who has won an NC, but yet when things happen in the community they're the last churches you see giving back.
For instance, a couple summers ago my parent's power was out due to storms in the area for about a week. Something like 90 degree temps. Two of the smaller, more meager churches in the area had members literally walking the neighborhoods handing out cold bottled water and checking on elderly people in the area. The mega church in the area? Nowhere to be seen until it had a guest speaker coming in where member could pay to see him speak. THEN they were canvasing the neighborhood to hand out flyers.
A church is supposed to be part of the community and to help nurture that community. It certainly seems like some of these mega churches are in it for the money and classism.
Thats sad. There is an episode of American Greed about some mega-church, I think was in Florida. There were several pro athletes who attended, many of the members were upper-middle class. The church was supposedly putting together this big project in some country in Africa that was suppose to supply people with clean water, put in new sewage systems, etc.
The guy running the church would show a presentation of the progress that was being made, every so often, etc. The members of the church really thought they were apart of something that was making a difference, but somehow it was discovered there was no such project going on. Over several years the person head of the church pocketed millions of dollars. The pictures he was using for the presentation ended up being pictures of a construction site in the US. I don't understand how people out 100% trust into these churches.
You mentioned how the mega-church in your area didn't do anything to help people. Come to think about it, do any mega-churches ever get involved after any type of charity?
With that said, I do think Healing Place church in Baton Rouge helped out during and after the floods, but now I am curious if they did, for sure, or not.

I've been to a few of these churches and you are dead on!! Not really mega churches though
I do enjoy going and hearing "the message".
I usually show up about 15-20 min late after all the music and whatnot, then leave right after "the message".
I've given them a few dollars over the years, I dont mind being charitable...I dont think they are all money hungry theives....

any mega church is contrary to what Scripture says a church should be focused on.
So is the word being preached there.

The Baptist church near me, owns a house in my neighborhood. In fact, its right across the street from me. There was a pastor there, who evidently lived there for a long time, but he retired and him and his family moved somewhere else. Then the next pastor was a young guy with a OT 7 wife, but I think he quit less than a year on the job. Then then they hired the guy who is the current pastor.
The current pastor and his family doesn't live in the house, they live somewhere else because he owns some type of company so he only comes around on Wednesdays and Sundays. Do pastors get good benefits? If so, that would be a good gig to have especially if you are a business owner, not to mention, on Sundays I see people stop by there throughout the day dropping off food to him and his family. So I bet they get enough food to keep their stomachs filled for most of the week.. So that cuts out expenses on groceries.

Any money that those pathological liars make is too much money.

I know they get a housing tax break. Some churches provide a rent free house, others provide a stipend. Depends on what the pastor and/or the church prefers.
