To make a film about the fashion world.

How the hell you make a compelling movie set in the fricking 1950s fashion world is beyond me... But it's Anderson and Day-Lewis...I have faith.
So now I guess you'll see Daniel at every NY fashion event for the next year as he 'becomes' a designer.

I like PTA a lot but he needs to start making sprawling ensemble pieces again. Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood and The Master are all fantastic works but they don't hold a candle to Boogie Nights or Magnolia.

We will have waited 5 years for DDL to make a new movie only to get this?

Nice. Hopefully it has a more Boogie Nights feel to it, I think it would be a nice change of pace to see DDL flex his chops and relax into a role that didn't require 100% drama at all times.

Boy, do I ever agree with this.
I love those last two films. LOVE THEM. I hated Punk-Drunk Love. I appreciated TWWB, but didn't enjoy it. I didn't last very long with The Master.
Someone tell me whether or not I should watch Inherent Vice.

Boogie Nights had the 1970s,disco music, 80s music, Porno, etc, etc... I can't see something being that fun set in 1950s NY fashion.
I think Anderson is a little too serious and perhaps self indulgnet now and probably won't make another Boogie Nights type of movie again.
Although I really liked Inherent Vice, it was so bizarre and hard to follow it made a lighter movie feel too heavy.
PS Yes you should watch Inherent Vice... And probably 2 or 3 times because it's so damn hard to follow the story

It took me a second watch to really enjoy it, and I had read the book.

Inherent vice is a nice little time waster movie. There's not much of a point to it and it kind of falls short of being good, but I enjoyed watching it

very well put together.
as for PTA, I love boogie nights, might be one of my top movies of all time. I loved inherent vice too. Magnolia was solid, but too long. I didn't watch the master, as the wife thought it looked terrible. I didn't like TWWB, and pubnch drunk love was alright.

I think it's underrated and underlooked. It's definitely an exercise in artistic excess, but it still proves PTA is a master of creating a time and place. I think he made it for fun.
I need to read it.

You cant be well put together AND need a book to explain it. It was poor story telling.

You guys aren't convincing me to watch Inherent Vice.
I have three young kids and have fill my free time judiciously. I sure as heck won't watch it more than once.

the movie will seem straightforward when you read it.

it was by design as I recall by PTA. You could figure out the basics of the movie by just watching it, but you needed to read the book to get to the next level.

its a good mindfrick film and a bit of what the frick just happened. its worth watching if you want devote a lot of mental energy to it.

after hard eight, boogie nights, and magnolia, PTA was my favorite director during a time when i was at my pinnacle of snobbery.
ive tried watching inherent vice twice and got bogged down after about 15-20 min. hopefully 3rd times the charm because id really like to see it, if for no other reason than to definitively know if its bad.
