Mel Gibson resurgent?

His new war film, Hacksaw Ridge, about conscientious objector Desmond Doss has premiered in Venice to rave reviews. Many are calling it a serious awards contender as well as Gibson's attempt at atonement for his past transgressions.
For those who don't know the story, Desmond Doss was a pacifist from Virginia whose religious beliefs forbade him from even touching a rifle. He became an Army medic whose bravery in the face of the enemy during the Battle of Okinawa earned him the Medal of Honor - without ever firing a bullet.

It looks cool, will definitely check it out.
Not sure if I'd call it a resurgent since it says "Made by the director of Braveheart" (or something to that effect). They know his name still carries some bad weight around.

He also announced he's directing a "Passion of the Christ" sequal entitled "The Resurrection".
He hasn't directed anything since Apocaplyto in 2006.

My only question is, why is Vince Vaughn the only American in this story about American heroes?

I watched one of his new movies the other day called Blood Father. Pretty damn good. There was an obvious Mad Max homage scene that was glorious.

Because it was filmed in Australia.

Second screening just got through. It received a 10 minute standing ovation from the press and other attendees.

It's a movie, not a documentary. I couldn't care less where they are from if they can act the part

Mel Gibsons Hollywood blacklisting is one of the dumbest things ever. I have no doubt that the reviews for this movie will be impacted simply bc it is Gibson.
From what I've read, he is generally well liked and respected by his peers.

Indeed.
Sad that a movie about one of the great American war heroes is full of Australians bc "omg Mel". I am really looking forward to seeing it, though.

That movie never loses it's power and impact.
I wish Gibson had done a trilogy of the Spanish Conquistadors...and the beginning of Part 2 is the ending of Apocalypto.
Or more Pre-Columbian stories - there's nothing really out there.

Why is this movie atonement?

I've been begging for a movie like this for years. It's the type of movie I most want to see right now, especially after reading on the subject. It's amazing how Conquistadors were able to dominate tens of thousands with just dozens of men and, especially, a few dozen horses. They tore up some great cultures. And Apocalypto was sheer brilliance.

Spielberg has been attempting to do a movie about Cortes and his conquest of the Aztecs for the last couple of years. It is coming steadily closer to fruition with Javier Bardem on tap to play the famed Spanish conquistador.

The Fountain already went there.
