Is ditching cable for Netflix or Amazon Prime a good idea?

Yeah. The only problem everyone has to solve is how to watch football.

Yes. Check out the thread on the Tech board. If you want ESPN you can get playstation VUE for ~$35.
The channels included with vue are shown below. They also just added NFL Network and for $40/season you can have NFL red zone.

Hell no. Just stare into her eyes and don't look down at what they're doing for anything. Nothing good can come of it.

Scruffy has seen a few dads do it, but most are cut by the doctor. Seems safer that way.

I did for 18 months.
All of the workarounds to see the sports I wanted to see got old, though.
I'm reattached.

yep. got an Apple TV Box and if I want to watch ESPN or Fox Sports, I use my parents log in. /r/MLBstreams and /r/NFLstreams for when I want to watch the game.

I've thought about it but came to the realization that everyone in the house watches a show on just about every channel package on Directv, so I'll continue to pay the piper.

Honestly, it seems like most cord cutters are either young and have parents that will give a log in. That's my situation.
Or they're any age and it's not about the money, so they pick up Sling or something they're willing to pay for.

I just "suspended" my dish network for 2 months, just to try it out. By suspending it instead of canceling it, you retain your loyalty stuff. Main reason for me, I pay $115 a month for dish, and don't watch it enough. When we do have it on in the living room, we mostly watch YouTube/Facebook/Reddit on our phones the whole time anyway.

I'll save you a little time and give you this tip:
Amazon FireTV + Playstation VUE + Antenna
I've had this setup for 4-5 months. I save $80 a month. I've missed nothing. I have all ESPNs and NFL Network also included in this. CBS and FOX with the Antenna for LSU and Saints games that aren't on ESPN.

quote:Yes, and it's worth it WITH a few caveats. One is what to do about watching football or live sports. Here are some options:
Is ditching cable for Netflix or Amazon Prime a good idea?
1. On an Amazon Fire TV, you can sideload KODI and different TV Addons that scrape the interwebs for links to broadcasts.
2. Sling TV or Playstation Vue (costs involved)
3. If you have a friend who likes you and wants to share his/her cable login information, you can get all the content they subscribe to in their cable package through apps on a smart TV, AppleTV, FireTV or other devices. FOX, CBS, ESPN, etc.
4. Outdoor/Indoor HD antenna.
Most original Netflix, HBO, and Amazon content is actually pretty solid and entertaining. With password sharing between friends, it can be quite the inexpensive and worthwhile experience.
Good luck. PS, I've gone from paying DirecTV $140/month to just paying only HBO $15/month and I get more quality entertainment than I ever did with a cable/satellite package.

Playstation VUE. $44/month and I get all the ESPNs and some Fox Sports channels. NfL network too.

If I can figure out a way to get Lifetime TV somehow, I am sure I could sell the wife on it, but that's the first network she will look for.

I did about a month ago. Saving about $70/month. Have PSV and Netflix and an ota antenna with a tablo whole home dvr setup.
I have no ragrets with cutting the cord but will say the PSV's user interface is kind of crappy. The channels show up as you would picture an app layout which wastes a lot of space on the screen. Would much prefer a grid view. The actual service is fine, though.

We did recently. We were down to one sat box and never used it. We just used our account logins for Apple TV and iPads.
Called my parents and offered $20 or $30 a month for their account logins and they said no, just use them for free.
Got a $10 HD over the air antenna.
Won't miss any LSU games other than the scrub games that are hard to watch anyway.
