Car Insurance question

I've been with USAA for 20 yrs, and wife and I pay $2800/yr for comprehensive, on 3 vehicles. (09 Tahoe, 13 civic, and 15 sierra). Son fixing to turn 16. I just got a quote from them, for when the time comes to switch him over from a permit to liscense and for the same coverage, my insurance will jump to $5600/yr. that's including the whole good grade, drivers ed, all the discounts possible. Any recommendation on who I should look at switching to. I knew it was going to be expensive, but wasn't expecting it to double. Seems like the boy may stay on a permit for a little longer than we were planning. Also, we have had only 1 claim on our insurance in 20 years (car got broken into) and no tickets.

Don't switch; putting anyone under 25 on your policy will make it double (or damn close to it).

Your son can use that new license to drive himself to a new job and pay for his new insurance

Pretty sure USAA has the best rates around. Young kids especially boys, it is going to go way up. It is a little cheaper if you get him a car instead of a truck too I think

I had her check it with him being primary driver on 09 Tahoe or the 13 civic. It came out cheapest to just add him to the policy and not designate a vehicle to him. If I designate him to the civic (the vehicle he will be driving) it actually $97 more every 6 months, than if I just don't designate him to any vehicle

I feel for you. Just went through it myself. It's a racket.

Ahh yea, didn't think about that.

It's free to get quotes from other places.

Hard to blame them. There's a ridiculously high chance that he'll be involved in an accident the first year.

I pay $600 per month for USAA car insurance with a 21 year old and a 17 year old. It's expensive as frick to add kids. Because they run into a lot of shite.

Your son can't get a job where he can afford to pay $233 a month?

did you think that mattered when it came down to ratings for you?

I pay $6600/yr with Progressive for 3 vehicles for myself, wife, and 16yo daughter. I do have 250/500K liability which drives my rates up along with the fact that my wife rear ended someone a couple of years ago and we got sued. It is our only at fault claim in our 17 years together. Me and the wife with just 2 cars used to be $2000/yr with GEICO before her accident.

is driving rates up.

What are your current limits and deductibles?

I am a USAA customer as well. I pay $1,154.00 per year for two vehicles.
100/300/100 with $1K deductibles and UMI. I also have a checking, savings, IRA, money market accounts, homeowners' and personal property insurance and one credit card with them.
The more "hook" they have in you, the better the discounts become.

Go get insurance just for him with progressive. Make him pay for it.
