Andrus Peat might change positions again.
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said Friday the team always planned to use the 2015 first-round pick on the right side, whether at tackle or guard, but with Peat struggling at right guard this summer, he could soon move to left guard.
"He hasn't played very well over on that right side, so we've got to keep looking and pay close attention to it," Payton said Monday on a teleconference. "I was hoping that we were able to put him in one spot. I know what he can do well, and we've got to find a way to be at a high enough level inside. And I think we can get that done."
Peat started training camp at left tackle while Terron Armstead was on the physically unable to perform list and moved to right guard when Armstead returned. Even though the team planned to have Peat at right guard while Tim Lelito and Senio Kelemete competed for the left guard job, it sounds like another poor effort by the offensive line in Friday's exhibition loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers could force some change.
"Look, the guard position needs to play better," Payton said Monday.
Peat was a left tackle in college, and the Saints drafted him 13th overall last year. Payton said the plan was for him to play on the right side, but with 32-year-old Zach Strief still a solid option at right tackle, the team wanted Peat to take over the right guard spot this summer.
As a rookie, Peat made a few starts at left guard, and even though he struggled at times, Payton said the Saints saw the necessary size and athleticism for him to excel inside on last year's tape.
Payton was critical Monday of the line play on both sides of the ball and said the team could look for outside help -- at all positions -- over the next 10 days based on roster cuts around the NFL or the potential trade market.
"I think we've got a group of guys that have played quite a bit," Payton said of the line. "Peat's played a lot of snaps a year ago. I expect him to be better. Now, it might be more over on the left side. We've moved him around enough, and we've got to settle in on where we feel like this player's going to play, whether it's the right or the left side.
"I think Strief, by and large, played pretty well last week. I think Lelito and Senio are competing for that spot, and I think we got to pay attention closely to what we think we can do well and try to highlight that some. So, it's still a work in progress, and obviously it wasn't good enough this weekend."

I think he's a fit at either the left or right side of the bench.

Jesus. How the frick did we not draft a guard this past draft? Unreal

i just wish they would pick a spot for him and let him learn and play that spot - not flipping him all over the line and not letting him get a comfort with the position.

If I'm being realistic, csp holds onto his vets too much to the detriment of the team. I fully expect peat to be LG so strief can start at RT...

I don't know what you saw as mediocre play when Peat switched to LG. The left side of the line was solidified when Peat stepped up. It was the right side of the line the looked mediocre during that portion of the season.

Is there really that much of a difference between drafting a Guard or singing free agent Guards that had draft grades?

He was playing fine at left guard
his play at LG was much better than his play at RT... i just think that some have a problem with us essentially drafting a G at 13... i say frick it... if it makes your team better, who gives a shite??

Does Peat have the eye of the tiger? I think that's the problem.

It's a surreal stubbornness that Payton and Loomis have by thinking they can turn every UDFA into gems while ignoring some of the most glaring holes.
DE and G should have been our first two picks.

Well if you pick up a guard 3-5 would he not be a better talent than say a UDFA? I guess it's crap shoot either way, but I think Payton has let past success through free agency cloud his draft day judgment.

So we knew he struggled on the right side last year and played well on the left side.
So instead of either 1) working him exclusively on the right side so that he could learn the position, footwork, etc. and improve or 2) playing him exclusively on the left side where he's more comfortable, we decided to do neither.
Brilliant.

Landon Turner and Avery Young both had 4th-5th round draft grades on them and we got them as UDFA. So whether we drafted them or not does it really matter? You can't say they didn't address Guard in the "draft process" because they pretty much did.
Now should they have addressed the G position in FA prior to the draft ..... probably so.

Gee the guy I picked for the RT spot hasn't played well at G. Hmm....

Absolutely, spot on, analysis. He played better at LG, until he got injured against the Falcons. Why not keep him at LG and let him fully learn the position? But, no, the coaches get out a grade school chemistry set and jack the the guy up and down the line with no consistent instruction.

Ugh.
Just leave him somewhere.

draft grades you seen on the internet are generally not reliable, esp when you get past the 2nd round

shite, even the 1st and 2nd round guys are a crapshoot...
and fwiw, both Turner and Young hopefully have a good degree, because they'll need it sooner rather than later... can't see either one of them panning out...
