RB Leipzig have slammed Dynamo Dresden fans as "tasteless" after a severed cow's head was thrown from the stands during Saturday's DFB Pokal clash.

The cities of Dresden and Leipzig are separated by only 100 kilometres and, when the sides met in the first round of the cup, Dresden fans snuck the head into the Stadion Dresden and threw it toward the pitch from the stands.

Supporters of eight-time East German champions Dynamo appeared to be showing their distaste for their big-spending local rivals, who were only founded in 2009 after Austrian soft drink giant Red Bull opted to install a football club in Leipzig.

Fans also displayed hundreds of banners showing their distaste during Dresden's penalty shootout victory, with one reading: "Bulls for slaughter!"

Dresden came from 2-0 down to beat Bundesliga club Leipzig after penalties and, speaking after the match, RB executive Oliver Mintzlaff called the fans' behaviour "tasteless."

Michael Born, his Dresden counterpart, said the club will examine how the fans managed to bring a cow's head into the stadium, and added that the supporters "exceeded tolerable limits."

RB Leipzig are unpopular among many supporters across Germany due to the club's commercial background.
