omeone hypothetically beat it by going 1-5 or 1-4 for 57 straight games, would that be impressive?
hypothetically, yes it would still be very impressive. but realistically, if someone had a 57 game hit streak, they would not only be getting 1 hit in those 57 games
quote:
There are plenty records more impressive than it.
clearly, which is why the record has only stood for 75 years

There will never, ever, be another pitcher to win 400 games.... much less 511. Pitchers average, what, 32 starts a year now? They'd have to win every single start, every single year...... for over 16 years to reach 511!!!

Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports, period.
No...it's not. And the arrogance of you to declare it is with the mention of "period" is ridiculous.
I'm not even going to bother mentioning a plethora of sport-specific achievements. I'm just going to show one sport that involves numerous events more difficult than hitting a baseball.

I'd be impressed if the balance beam was moving and spinning such that the gymnasts had to anticipate where they were going to have to land. If so, then landing successfully 3 times in 10 attempts would make them star performers. Instead, even average gymnasts hit their target close to 10 times in 10 attempts.

John Stockton's career assist record is underrated in regards to unbreakable records. Chris Paul would have to play until age 45 with no decline in his game to be able to break his record. Crazy part was Stockton played 4 years of college and didn't start for the Jazz until his 4th year in the NBA.

Appears to be a record that will never be broken.

It's easily one of the hardest things to do.
Hitting a 100 mph ball the size of an apple with movement is almost impossible to do for an average person.
Yes gymnastics is very difficult, even on par with the difficulty of hitting a baseball. But like an above poster said it's predictable movement with training.
I could train for 6 months and be almost not terrible at gymnastics.
I could train for 6 months in a batting cage and still strike out against major league pitchers 10 times out of 10
So yeah hitting a pitch is still harder.
Period.

Oh he's wrong as hell. Already getting down voted into oblivion.

Not hypothetically but factually, do you know what DiMaggio's BA was during his streak yr? If there are "more impressive records", why do almost every MLB expert say that this record will never be broken? And, obviously, it's only been done once in the history of MLB.

can i be that guy who asks wtf happened october 29,2015?

I'll take the Cy Young 511 wins record as the most unbreakable. I don't care what any statistician comes up with. That record will stand forever!

Cy Young's wins record is IMO easily the most unbreakable record in sports

Gymnastics isn't even a real sport.

Also add his 700+ complete games to that

One..."one" of the hardest. The poster I commented on declared that it was THE hardest...PERIOD.
I'm not saying it's not difficult.

So is nearly every "basic" movement in elite gymnastics.
quote:
I could train for 6 months and be almost not terrible at gymnastics.
You couldn't even establish the requisite flexibility and strength for the sport in 6 months, let alone attempt the necessary skills needed to perform such movements.
The act of swinging a baseball bat isn't inherently difficult. It's establishing the accuracy, timing, acceleration, etc., needed to make contact which becomes difficult.
Most "average" people can't even perform a basic handstand or flip, and consequently would be unable to incorporate either into an artistic and entertaining routine combined with numerous other movements.
There is an immense amount of proprioception demanded by the body in gymnastics. Also, gymnastics rings and the uneven or parallel bars are hardly a stable surface. A gymnasts's playing surface can be extremely unpredictable.

Period.
Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson didn't practice baseball year-round, yet both could come in and hit a baseball. Either would be unable to do the same thing in a sport which arguably demands the greatest range of fitness.

In gymnastics, the athlete is moving around the playing surface. And as I mentioned, the rings and uneven/parallel bars are both unstable surfaces which the athlete has to account for. The athlete is not in a stationary position like a batter anticipating a pitch.

If so, then landing successfully 3 times in 10 attempts would make them star performers.
How often do you see a gymnast execute every movement in their routine with perfect symmetry and no misstep? There is a reason why 10s are so seldom seen.

I don't get this point. They both played college baseball and already had the skillset necessary. It's not like they were just two guys who walked in off the street.
