Have an old 870 20ga was considering modifying so wife can handle for home defense. What modifications do you suggest?

Probably not too bad in factory form
Youth stock

I had an extra barrel for my Browning pump 12 Gauge; so I just cut it down to 18.5", removed the plug and loaded with #1 Buck.
I have a balcony off my bedroom and I plan on following Joe Biden's advice whenever I hear an intruder.

Is it black? Because it has to be black.

I added a Phoenix Technology adjustable stock with pistol grip to help fit my wife comfortably. Added Hogue overmolded forend and +3 extended mag. It was the 870 youth express I started with and I'm very satisfied with the results. Wife handles it well and confident shooting it. 20 gauge accessories are a bit harder to find than 12 gauge just have to be diligent.

I would not use anything other than a stock shotgun for home defense. A youth model 870 is what you need for the wife.
Just imagine if she or you had to kill some savage with it. You'd tell the jury from the witness stand how you didn't want to kill anyone, and the bad scary guy made you. then some fricking lawyer (like me) would hold up that nasty looking shotgun with a pistol grip and light on it and tell the jury how you really wanted to use this killing machine and shouldn't be believed.
nothing but stock pistols and shotguns and ammo for home defense in my house.

Just go buy a used youth 870.

I agree with these but I think the short barrel is easily the most effective way to make a shotgun home-defense-ready.
MidwayUSA 870 barrels
Here's an 18.5" 20 gauge barrel for the 870. I would start here and see if anything else is even necessary.

This, you will spend more on the modifications and the old 870s, especially if it is a wingmaster, are a gun worthy of not messing up.
