Who is the GOAT of GOATs?

Phelps love has understandably taken over the Olympic board and he is getting a lot "greatest athlete of all time" hype. My only thing with jocking Phelps is all the events swimmers compete in. But, then again, if you measure greatness by how much better an athlete is than the next closest competition, I'm guessing he's up there.
People like Jack Nicklaus, Serena, and Federer have piled up awesome numbers of major titles, but they're not THAT much better than the people in second. I remember seeing some insane stats about Gretzky on Puck Daddy and I think baloo has made a case he is GOAT of GOATs. What say you? Is there some marathon runner or person in a lesser known sport who didn't have the opportunity to pile up medals/titles who should be considered?

The Bambino was not only one of the greatest sluggers, but also a very good pitcher.

Let's revisit this when LeBron retires...

There's literally no way to determine this. It's pretty much pointless to compare people from different sports.

Kerri Walsh. Never lost an Olympic match and only lost one in tournament play in her career. Pretty dominating IMO

I agree, but it can be fun to talk about. It's almost impossible to judge people at different positions within the same sport.
You could make an argument that Larry Allen could be the best NFL player of all time and it wouldn't be a ridiculous argument.

It's Phelps. He's been in 5 Olympics.
The thing about swimming is that yes they compete in a lot of events, but they also race in prelims, semis and finals. They race in multiple races a day. Lots of endurance.
Plus they go up against a ton of guys that specialize in particular strokes.
To do what he's done in multiple events, multiple Olympics, with multiple different strokes. To be by far the greatest Olympian.
21 gold medals and counting.
Phelps is the GOAT athlete.
