Looking for somewhere scenic in the Mountains near Denver

I'm trying to plan a short vacation for the family (young kids). I've been to Denver, Breckenridge, Keystone area, etc. I'd like to find a nice cabin to rent in the mountains during the winter. I don't want to drive for hours from Denver, but 1-2 is fine. I'm not looking to ski, but just do a few light excursions, see the mountains, play in the snow, etc.
Anyone have any recommendations on areas to look in, or a specific place to rent? I'm not too interested in staying in a condo. I'm more interested in renting a small house / cabin.

Granby, Grand Lake, Winter Park, Bailey, Aspen Park/Conifer, Estes Park, Nederland, Lyons, Manitou Springs, Woodland Park, Evergreen, Genesee.
Nederland is at the doorstep of the Indian Peaks Wilderness which is on the east side of the Continental Divide. Tons of hiking, biking, fishing, around there.
Lake Granby and Grand Lake are awesome as well, just on the other side of the divide.

ESTES PARK is really nice and close to Fort Collins and not a bad drive from Denver. Very pretty places to go and you can get to much of the mountains by car. Always snow around there too even in summer.
Lots of cabins too.
Also south of Denver near pikes peak we have gotten cabins as well, but they were more remote.
