shite it ain't even the Muslims. The traditional witch doctor beliefs over there are fricking insane.

My cousin who has traveled all over the world had a rule.
NEVER go to a country that ends in STAN or ERIA. As long as you do that you'll be ok.

Venezuela will shite on most of the stans.

Ehh... I dunno about that. Venezuela has fallen off from what it was, which was an aspirant county. The Stans have always been absolutely shite. They've never aspired to or moved up toward anything but violence and frickwad backwards Islam. Even before Islam... hell, when Alexander the Great went through there it was backwards. Homeboy made it to the Syr Darya, said "frick this" and headed southeast to India.

At the moment though I would go biking through many of the stans before I stayed a week in Caracas.

Santiago, it is not. Haha

I've been to Lagos and Port Harcourt twice. Both trips were a little over a week long.
Lagos wasn't that bad, you can move around the city if your company has a paid and trusted driver. Actually, the best damn Indian food I've ever eaten was in Lagos. I'm not crazy about Lagos and wouldn't want to work there on a regular basis, but I'd go for a week again if I had to.
Port HC, Never fricking again. That's a sketchy arse shithole man. I didn't see any on my trip, but coworkers saw a body in a gutter, and another saw a man get jumped and beaten by a mob.
In general, Nigeria is what a true 3rd world country looks like. It took at least a week of being stateside to get the stench of the place out of my sinuses. Death is a mosquito bite or a wrong place at the wrong time away at any given minute, and life ain't worth shite there.
Ghana is much better. Safer, and more westernized.

I work with a Nigerian, and he won't take jobs there. That's all I need to know.

I live in the most populous muslim country and doing just fine.
As for Nigeria, the threat of Boko Haram is not really an issue in Lagos. But I know several people who have worked there and two of my good friends are moving there next month. They live on a decent compound and say its OK and survivable but from the stories I have heard I would not go there. Just not worth it honestly. You can typically make just as much money in Ghana or Angola and they are much better places to live and work than Nigeria.

Keep in mind Nigeria is one of the nicer and more developed African nations as well, fwiw.

Boko Haram gonna love you tenderly.
They prefer teenage girls.
They sell the girls. They just kill the boys. Around the same time a number of girls were seized as sex slaves a dormitory full of boys was burned to the ground - killing all of the boys inside.
A probable primary motive for taking the girls wasn't just to have some more sex slaves - although I'm sure that didn't bother anyone in the organization. The primary motivation was probably to attract western media attention and outrage - and most importantly money. Some percentage of whatever money that flowed into the country could be successfully hijacked by the warlords and used for their own purposes.
FWIW, the phrase boko haram means forbidden education - it is about preventing westernization and spreading islamic teaching by whatever means are most effective.

Not yet. I tried for close to a year but couldn't get the gig I wanted. Now I have an offer in Asia that I'm considering, but I'll always wish I had made it to Lagos. Would be super exciting/terrifying for a year and then I'd get it out of my system.

How much more do people make there? I can't see how anyone would want to go there for less than 5x their salary.
Posted on 8/5/16 at 7:55 am to LSU1018
It isn't just the salary (though that bump can be considerable). You generally get a spot in the company compound (meaning you live rent free) and many offer cafeterias and other services which help cut down on expenses.
Plus living like a monk for your term over there means relatively little other expenses since you almost never leave the compound.

I did a hitch in EG. West Africa is pretty simple, assume everyone , who doesn't work for your company , wants to kill you. That way, you'll keep your guard up. These stories about people getting into unknown cabs and leaving the compound , Darwin-ism at its finest.

quote:This would have been true a few years ago but Nigeria and much of western/ central Africa has gotten worse thanks to Boko Haram and refugees flooding the country. Ghana is okay but all it takes is a nearby conflict for the country to get flooded with undesitable refugees. The only area of Africa that is decent and seems to be getting better are the southwestern countries (Namibia, Gabon, Angola, and Botswana).
Keep in mind Nigeria is one of the nicer and more developed African nations as well.

Single. No attachments. Higher salary, free flights, free room and board, free meals, excitement, travel. Like a hitch in the military, except you get paid well and actually make the world a better place.
