Posted this in your topic on the Travel Board, but...

quote:

Rainey Street is terrific for bar-hopping.

- Banger's is a good spot for brunch on Sunday. All of the tables are communal/long picnic tables and the wait-time can get long.

- Lucille might be my favorite spot on Rainey. Good, but not great, cocktails at an affordable price and you'll find a lot of dogs roaming around outside.

- When you're drunk, hop across the street to Big Fat Greek Gyros. Sunday is my "cheat day" for eating, and this is a must-stop for me.

- Icenhauer's is awesome, too. While most of the bars on Rainey are converted bungalow houses, Icenhauer's inside is really set up as a "house." On Sunday, there's a cover band outside that is really popular.

- Container Bar is unique as it is literally made out of shipping containers with a common space in the middle. Solid spot.

- Next door to that is Bungalow, which has a food truck out back and great prices on drinks.

- El Naranjo, next door to Icenhauer's, makes a great margarita. Very strong.

It's hard to go wrong with anything on Rainey Street. Good crowds at every bar and having a patio at each place is prime.

If you want to do something fun, go to the greenbelt (twin falls) in the morning for hiking and swimming in the creek. You can also check out Barton Springs pool. Warning though, it is extremely cold.

Go to Oasis off Lake Travis in Steiner Ranch area it has the best lake view in Austin. Food is Avg but your family will be amazed with the place promise ya. Have been here 10 years and watched that place grow over the years.

Agreed. If you've got half a day to kill and day-drink, go to Franklin. If not, try La Barbecue or Micklethwaite meats.

Oasis off Lake Travis ... Food is Avg

Huge understatement here. Food is awful. The menu literally says "Proudly serving Sysco".

Go to the Oasis Brewery right next door. Same views without the terrible food (or 2 hour wait for a table).

EDIT: Best of Austin

East Side King for asian....several locations. I like the one at liberty bar.
Torchys is great. Veracruz all natural is their equal.
Whip In for Craft beer and Indian food....my favorite spot in Austin.
Donn's Depot for old Austin.
Jester King for a day of drinking on a hill country ranch.
Uichi for sushi.
Easy Tiger for beers on a nice day....sit in the back courtyard.

You're Mr. ATX, right? I guess my additional recommendation along with the other great ones is just asinine.

Thanks Ted.
This brings up another question. We're flying in and staying at Van Zandt so do think we'll need a rental or is everything mentioned relatively close enough to walk or hitch a ride.

Rainey St. is at your doorstep. Take a cab everywhere else. Most are short trips. Some longer if you want to explore.

If you want to go to any hill country places I'd imagine you'll need a rental. If staying around the city limits no rental necessary

Nightlife - Rainey St.
Food - Micklethwaites BBQ, Hula Hut, Trudys, Kerbey Lane for the pancakes, Bangers, Salt Lick in Driftwood, Pizza on 6th. Was hammered one night and bought two large pizzas for about $70.

Daytime - Barton Springs, Pitch & Putt par-3 course. Up by the Arboretum there is a bar that is full of games but I can't remember the name for the life of me.

I also enjoyed walking around the Capitol building and UTexas.

Enjoy!
