question about bacteria in the waterways

I'm really puzzled as to why all of a sudden they have this crisis. I really wonder if it is because our bodies have been trained not to fight this as we are so much more proactive on cleanliness now a days. I mean......in the civil war, soldiers were dipping canteens and drinking the water out of waterways on the norm.
I'm not saying NOT to clean your hands and all that shite. I'm just wondering if we continue to fight bacteria with the use of lotions/soaps that our immunity system is saying "don't need me..........see ya".
what's your theory?

warmer than usual temperatures with less rainfall to keep water flowing. bacteria loves stagnant water.
we've got issues here from all the geese around lakes and rivers.

I wouldn't exactly use this as an example of healthier times gone by seeing as how (a) waterways weren't as poluted in the 1860's as they are now and (b) it's not as if many people in the 1860's had long life-spans regardless of where their drinking water came from.
My theory - It just seems "worse" because there is more coverage about the issue than ever before. That can be said for a lot of today's "crises". 20 years ago you didn't have social media allowing everyday folks to pass information to hundreds, thousands of people instantaneously. The internet was in it relative infancy and their weren't 5 million news sites competing for clicks; There were only about 5-7 legitimate news channels on TV. Simply put, I suspect all this stuff was happening then (maybe to a lesser degree). The only thing that's changed is now everyone hears about it in real time.

Bacteria in the water is part of a natural and healthy ecosystem. However, the bugs that typically cause problems to human health are fecal coliforms.
They are usually found in high enough concentrations to cause infection as the result of poor sanitation.
There are other organisms in the water as well, and you may be somewhat right about hyper cleanliness leading to decreased resistance.
However as a society overall deaths from infectious diseases are very low compared to before the discovery of antimicrobial agents. Diarrheal diseases and wound infections were the number one killer. Now we die from diseases that typically pop up as you age like heart disease or cancer.

Like you said, not something new. The news is just looking for new shite to show the public to distract them from the real "issues".

This.....not sure about the "distract them" part, but the news jumps on this every other summer or so it seems like.

From what I understand, this bacteria typically infects people with compromised immune systems. I would think these people would have died a similar death in the pre-antibiotic days.

do you think that they were born with these compromised immune systems or is it the fact that they've taken so much meds over their lifetime that their bodies just said "frick it"?

Guy on the news said a lot of it is from the flooding in Texas, that all kinds of crap got washed into the gulf.

I would say that the bacteria have already been exposed to the super antibiotics we use to treat them. As a result, they have developed an immunity to them, making them much more difficult to treat.

It's not new. Your awareness of it is new. Guy across the street died from it 30 years ago. There just wasn't this culture of fear and yoga pants moms telling everyone on FB that your kids will die if they swim anywhere but Bocage.

What type of diseases are they concerned about?

Sensationalism by the media and short memories. A family friend almost lost her life after a cut at Grand Isle - in the early 80's.
People are scared to death of everything these days and the media play to that. What people are scared of and what is actually statistically dangerous to them are two entirely different things.

Because the news media is cultivating a population of snowflakes who are too scared to leave the house.
