Saw a great idea for a live bait well in your boat.

I know most boats already have them built in but they kill bait usually because of their design. As most know a round bait tank is the way to go,especially if you're going to attempt to keep Pogies.

Anyway, here it is.

Already has a drain,is insulated and has a lid. Just add a circulation/aerator pump and you're GTG.

Old convenience store ice barrel cooler.I've seen them rolled to the back of stores a bunch of times.

why would i use a square ice chest when the boat already had a square bait well built in?

Hell idk. You're wanting to bring this 4 foot monstrosity on your boat. Thought I would suggest an ice chest.

Also, they do make circular ice chests...

If you have trouble keeping bait alive then go to your welding supply store and get a small bottle of oxygen. With the right regulator and diffuser, you can get 75 hours of run time off a 20 cubic foot tank, which is about a foot and a half tall and weighs 10 pounds. Plus pure oxygen delivered to your bait is like having them hopped up on caffeine when they hit the water.

I can share my setup if anyone is interested

This can obviously be scaled up or down depending on how much bait you want to carry- but I probably had 30 finger mullet in the small gray cooler (Coleman stackable) and not one died over about 7 hours. The water was pretty hot by the end of the day.

Keep alive KA970 diffuser (sold on Amazon as well as direct from keep alive)

A medical oxygen regulator that has delivery pressure rated in liters per minute. (I run it at 1/8 Lpm for about 45 minutes at a time and then switch it off for a half hour, there's enough O2 built up in the line to keep delivering oxygen- but you do want periods of time where it's not delivering the gas- the water still needs access to CO2, so open the lid every now and then)

Then of course the cheap clear medical tubing. You can get the whole setup for 75-100 bucks if you have access to an oxygen tank already. 150 or so if you don't, but you can but the tank outright from a welding supply store (pawn shops usually have them too in that size) and then just pay for the gas to swap it out with a new one when you run out

If you know guys that stock ponds or anyone that depends on keeping small fish alive for extended periods of time, they all use oxygen. When you think about it, with an overfilled live well the existing oxygen in the water is going to get used up by the fish. When it's gone they're going to suffocate. The small bubbles created by the diffuser allows the oxygen to absorb into the water and that eliminates that issue entirely. Even with overcrowding and rising water temps, that last mullet was as fresh as a spring chicken. As I said though, you can't just leave it on for a few days and expect the bait to be alive- just like us, pure oxygen is a great booster but the water still needs periodic access to other atmospheric gases
