If im still a prosecutor when my kids are old enough to have phone, im going to let them know that once a month im going to bring their phones to our computer forensics guys to see exactly what's been on their phones, deleted or not

really im probably just gonna take them for a day or two and TELL them im doing that, but either way it should scare the shite out of them

With him and the younger brother running back and forth between houses I think a cellphone would serve him better. How many of you guys have kids with cellphones? Obviously I know I'll have to set the ground rules so we won't eat up data. How do y'all control the usage of them?
Sounds like you could get him a phone to only use at home? Would be no different than him playing video games or on the computer, plus you can get rid of the house phone.

I don't see why not.

I have no kids, but my parents made us all (four kids) wait till we were 13 to get phones. Didn't get texting till high school. Didn't get the iPhone till after I graduated high school. Kids younger than teenager shouldn't have phones period. Let them be kids and show you they're responsible enough to have a phone.

Like people have said already, it's your phone that you allow her/him to use. It's a privilege, not a right.

Yeah, that was wrong. What I meant was, when I was his age I let my parents know where I was and if/when I needed to be picked up. When I played sports, they knew when practice ended and they picked me up. That hasn't changed. He does things and gets picked up and makes it around just fine without a cell. If he's not where he is supposed to be then he is disciplined. Why let a 12 year old have so many options to where he needs a cell go stay in touch with his parents?

My older son turned 10 last weekend and we took 5 of his friends to the movies. All had phones and it was all they looked at before the show started. We went get pizza and ice cream after and had to ask the boys to put them away, they were all excitedly sharing screens for games and what not....it was crazy. What was even more shocking was that we found out none of them own a bike....blew me away.

We are holding out, kiddo doesn't have a phone. Don't see the need at this point in his life.

Side bar, we have phone at home that is for emergencies. We pay $8.99/month for the basic service. Only calls we get ate telemarketers....thank goodness we've not had to use it.

11-12 is an appropriate age I would think. They go to the movies and the mall with friends, so might as well have a phone to call for a ride.

I have way more experience dealing with kids & dangers of cell phones than you do.

But to each his own. By all means let em have access at 2nd Grade and take your chances.

Preferably, they can enjoy life more NOT being buried in a phone 24/7.

For me once a child starts attending activities that a parent doesn't stay the whole time a phone becomes pretty necasery. For instance at age nine we have encountered multiple times where dance class ends early or runs late. Tennis practice is suspended midway due to rain, and etc. At 5-7, we'd stay at such events the whole time.
Also if your going to leave a child alone somewhere for an amount of time. Same goes for a child who goes to friends houses alone as well.
In our community almost every 9 year old has one. There are a few parents who are opposed, but more often than not those children use their parents phones or iPads at night anyways.
