Sounds like your buddy is lazy af. Working at Amazon is a smart move for driven and proactive people. Darwinism is our belief that weeds out the shitty workers.

Most jobs at corporate earn $100K per year. My stock portfolio is worth $250K which will be vested in 2 years. Working at Amazon was the best decision I've ever made. Life is damn good!!!

Meh, I know a ton of people who work or have worked at Amazon, in both tech roles and finance. They all either hated it or are just the kind of people who don't mind working crazy hours. I couldn't do it. You can find equivalent pay in seattle with significantly better work life balance

How's the work/life balance? Does it vary by position? Back in 2014 I was contacted on LinkedIn about a Sr. Technical Writer position, but I didn't pursue -- not based on the bad press about working there, just way too comfortable at my home office. Also, the amount of listings for that same position at the time made me think it had a high turnover rather than a high demand, and the fact that someone reached out to me about it, and editor/writer positions are notoriously abused in terms of long hours as well as odd hours.
