quote:TV ratings as a whole are lower on network telivision now. Shows averaging over 10 million people an episode happened all the time. People are cutting the cord, cable TV is so much bigger now, etc.
Aside from a few channels there wasn't much difference in what was on back then.............

Baseball is the number two sport in this country. The problem with baseball is everyone follows their team and once they are out of the playoffs stop watching. Baseball is number 2...it's not really even debatable.
Last year, the NBA and ESPN agreed on a 9 year 24 billion dollar deal.
Gee, I wonder why ESPN would pay so much more for the NBA?????
You turn on the TV and you see commercial after commercial from NBA players whether it is State Farm, BBVA Compass, Under Armour, Nike, Sprite, Kia, etc...
Hardly any commercials for baseball players.
Follow the money, and it's clear which league is on top, because these companies are investing much more heavily in the NBA than MLB.

the explosion of cable television?
Is cable bigger now than back then? I remember reading a stat that cable subscriptions peaked in 99-2000, and have been going down since?

I watched the Seattle/NYRB game last night during game 7.
I watched the U.S. Open in full and didn't catch the NBA Finals until the 2nd quarter.

You should be shot for thinking Colston is better than Demaryius Thomas.

I'm more talking about the explosion of quality original programming on cable telivision that you have now. I'm not looking at any data but I'm pretty confident that more people watch cable programming now than they did 20 years ago

Meanwhile, the MLS' championship game back in December drew an overnight rating of 0.43.
And the highest ever for a Premier League game was a 1.57 rating.

I know a lot of soccer fans. I don't know anyone that says it will pass MLB and NBA "soon", but I do think it's close to passing the NHL on the national level. However, the MLS Cup and EPL games are on at terrible times. MLS cup is often on at the same time as cfb conference championships. The biggest EPL matches late in the season are often on Monday afternoons or Sunday mornings.

MLB is easily my favorite pro sport and I think the NBA probably has it beat for popularity nationally

Wut? Dustin Johnson complete his round just after 8 PM. I know there were another grouping behind him and a possible penalty for grounding his club but the winner was pretty much determined after Johnson finished his round. Were you watching the U.S. Open on tape delay or something?

NBA is better for a casual fan because they have players like LeBron who they can identify. MLB does a HORRIBLE job of marketing players, it is about the teams. That is part of the reason I think the NBA appeals more to a casual fan. You still have your hardcore teams but use this board, people are LeBron fans. Not Cleveland fans but LeBron, NBA does a great job with its marketing.

I'm guessing that to someone in Chalmette, anyone who wears a shirt with sleeves is a hipster.

Yet if you did a per-city survey, I bet MLB comes out on top. More Yankees fans than Knicks fans. Six and Celtics. Phillies and Sixers. Nats/Os and Wizards. Cubs and Bulls. You do this for every city and MLB wins at an 80+% clip.
But NBA is national. It has more national fans and interest.

I love the MLB, but the NBA is easier to pickup during the playoffs and watch. I did not see one regular season NBA game, but enjoyed the finals. Baseball is like watching Game of Thrones; you have follow all year to get excited about the post season.

The horrible marketing MLB does of their superstars makes a difference in the national numbers compared to what football and basketball bring
I think it would be fascinating to ask fans of teams in multi sports cities to rank the sports they'd want a championship in
Football would obviously be #1 but I think it'd be very interesting to see what #2 is
100% guessing here but I have a feeling there would be a few NBA choices like Miami and LA but northeast and Midwest would choose baseball. Hell it may just be who I'm friends with and I will gladly admit Astros are #1 to me but I'm pretty sure if you polled everyone I know in Houston people would rather an Astros World Series than Rockets championship
Granted, when you look at the local tv numbers what I'm saying isn't that surprising but still an interesting topic nonetheless
Eta: should've finished reading the thread, my thoughts were already mentioned

I'm a casual fan of both baseball and basketball. I'd rather a Braves WS than a Hawks NBA championship.
HOWEVER, I watched the NBA playoffs and I don't watch even a minute of the MLB playoffs.
So, if I am any indication, I support the argument that baseball rules locally and the NBA nationally.
