Been a favorite of mine for many years now. Great band. New album is top notch, sometimes jaw-droppingly good. Not always in the mood for them, but they have consistently put out very good to great albums. The last 3 have been especially great.

There are few bands that have undergone such a dramatic change in sound and style over their years of playing.

Brave Murder Day is a landmark release in the death doom subgenre. Everything Mikael Akerfeldt touches seems to turn to gold. Also, Dance of December Souls is nothing to sneeze at.

I also enjoy the more alternative rock-tinged sound they have adopted since the 2000s, but it's like you're not even listening to the same band.

Haven't heard the new album yet but I was rocking The Great Cold Distance earlier this week.

I like it. The singer's best friend is Mikael Akerfeldt, which is how I discovered them. They have several fantastic albums:

Brave Murder Day
Last Fair Deal Gone Down
The Great Cold Distance

Honestly, most of the newer music I find myself in love with is coming from northern Europe:

Denmark:
Mew & Veto

Sweden:
Opeth, Meshuggah, and Katatonia

Icelend:
Sigur Ros & Amiina

Then you throw in Apparatjik, which is Denmark/Norway/Sweden/Scotland.

I would also recommend giving Enslaved a good listen. They are a former Norwegian black/viking/pagan metal band that have incorporated more and more progressive elements into their sound.
