What's the point of marriage?

Historically, it started out as a way to unite families for power reasons and to provide children.
Then it shifted to marriage being based on love and wanting to be one person for the rest of their life. "Till death do us part"
But with divorces on the rise, doesn't that defeat the point of marriage?
If you can marry someone and commit to love and care for them forever in sickness and in health till death do you part, but then get a divorce 2 years later, what's even the point to begin with?
Sure the tax breaks are nice, but marriage has lost a lot of its initial value.
It seems nowadays girls just want a ring to show off to their friends and a fancy wedding and afterwards complain, then want a divorce then take half your earnings (if you're dumb enough to not get a pre-nup).
So if two people aren't going to stay together forever and legally they can get divorced whenever they want and in most marriages people do get divorced, what's the point of marriage in the first place?
You don't need to get married to have kids, and you don't need to get married to have sex, so I don't see any advantage to it for men or women.

As a young fella, Divorce Corp(doc on Netflix) scared the shite out of me. Pick the wrong woman and you could be living in the poor house as a middle aged man.

The pussy.

There's a 2/10 chance you pick the right woman. If you do, congrats, marriage is good. If you don't, you're fricked.

Mutual obsessive torture

It's only advantageous for women. They can cheat and still be entitled to compensation in the divorce. Marriage is fine when you're young and want to raise a family. But getting remarried after your kids are older and your career is on track is a very bad business decision. You're bringing in a 50% partner who invested nothing toward the business other than tits and vagina.
No thanks.
No thanks.

There are NO tax breaks for us...

It's a social status nowadays.
People have this idea stuck in their head that if they're not married or have kids by a certain age then they are a failure. It's sickening, depressing and hilarious all at the same time.

To assure that you never get to do what you want, when you want or how you want. In exchange for that you get to live in a clean house and occasionally eat a nice meal you didn't have to cook. Being married is better than single

I did it to piss you off.

What's the point of this thread?
If you don't like it, don't get married.
Are you trying to take away the option for people who want to?

There are some sad lonely people in this thread.

I don't know why this is getting downvoted so much. Agree 100%. If I married ANY girl that I've dated, I'd be fricked. Maybe that's more of a reflection on me though ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

Monogamy is something humans created it's not natural

In a species where millions bet on Powerball every week, it should be no surprise that many people are willing to gamble on marriage.

In some parts of this world families marry their teenage daughters for cows.

People tend to blame marriage for being flawed or a failure as an institution. I find that view shortsighted and naive for a few reasons. Marriages fail because
1. People marry for the wrong reasons (money, attractiveness)
2. People search for significant others that have appealing qualities if you're looking for a girl to bang at a bar, but not if you're looking for a wife.
3. People aren't willing to put in the work to make it successful. And it takes both people to make it work.
4. People do not discuss the real issues that will matter in a marriage and get married only because it "feels right." This is sort of related to reason 1.
It basically all boils down to people not looking at what is important in a spouse before making that commitment and living solely by their feelings.

Commitment, who can do it? Best thing I ever did. 35 years of joy. Can you commit? So few can.
