Greatest fighter I ever saw.

Maybe I'm being carried away but isn't this a HUGE sports death? Who was the last sports person to die as big as Ali? I'm failing to even come up with anyone right now.
ETA: MAYBE Ted Williams???

The answer is nobody. Hell, I would say the last person to die who was as famous as Ali is Michael Jackson.

DiMaggio might be as big as Ted, idk I'm legit failing at coming up with anyone. Bench might be right, biggest death in modern sports unless I'm missing something.
And if that's the case this is spectacular (not to make light of it)

It's official.
A great athlete but not a great American. May he rest in peace.
No. Sorry, if I have to hear crap on here about how confederates were great Americans when they literally killed Americans in order to keep other Americans in chains, Ali was a great American.
Sometimes standing up when your country is wrong is what makes you great.

Look....the guy was incredible. Easily the greatest boxer of our time (at least in my opinion). I'm not trying to take anything away from him. But there is no denying how polarizing a figure he was.
Dr. King was polarizing in his time too, both were vindicated by history.

Been thinking about it and the only name I can come up with that would be bigger would be Michael Jeffrey Jordan
Don't think Tiger or Peyton or any NFL guy competes
Jack Nicklaus would be up there but not quite
Maybe Gretzky in limited circles

Both Tiger and Peyton would be bigger than Gretzky

Peyton will shite on Gretsky in the end as far as an iconic athlete

This is one of the more convoluted threads I've read in a while. Ali just passed and we've got a history lesson, a grammar lesson, accusations of racism, multiple comments about how advanced RollTide's degree in dick sucking really is, and somewhere among the rubble are a few RIPs.
I blame it on the NBA Finals. It brings out the worst of the MSBers.

Tigerdroppings has done full internet in the last few years.
This place used to only have oldfricks posting, who used memes like "cool story bro" 5 years after they were a thing. We're full internet now, so you can expect internet things from here on out.

You'll never hear that from me. The Confederates were, by and large, great soldiers. Great Americans? Hardly.

Ali was vindicated by history, we all know that.... even from McNamara himself.
Great Americans take stands that may be unpopular at the time, they just don't blindly follow immoral orders ... that's what we prosecuted the Germans for after WWII.
don't really give an hit about Ali.....but I do have to say there's a lot of folk up in here who don't know they're history...and that's sad

frick you
It is possible to dislike what Ali did without being "racist".
I guess you think despising Jane Fonda for what she did is sexist.
You are precisely the sort of idiot being turned out by public education these days

I am too young to remember him being good. I can remember him losing to Spinks. Freaked my parents out because I cried. My dad was the typical anti Ali guy at the time. "Screw that guy. Loud mouth, draft dodging SOB!" Until he saw I was crying.
Both my parent said, WTF!
shite talking has become cliche' because Ali did it. To be who he was and as great as he was at the time that it was? He led an incredible life. From being thought of as nothing more than a draft dodging bastard to lighting the Olympic Torch. RIP.
