I'm glad that schools other than Alabama are seeing that it is not easy to hire a coach today. Last year I had to listen to everyone go on and on about how nobody wants the Alabama job. People made all kinds of fun about some of the rumored candidates wanting to stay at their school. Times have changed and the coaches have changed. I think coaches used to measure their success by the jobs they could get. All the coaches aspired to coach at Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama, USC and on and on and on. Today a guy can make $1 million a year at a school where he only has to go 8-4 to keep everyone happy and not have all the pressure of the fans/alums. Sure, some of the coaches still want those big name jobs but most of them just want to win somewhere and make $$$. Unless Michigan has a Michigan man who wants the job they are going to have to pay to get someone up there. The days of living off your name are over. Alabama didn't offer Saban $32 million over 8 years because it sounds good, that is what it takes to get someone to take the job.

I know this won't be a popular opinion here but I think all the ongoing searches today just put a spotlight on what an accomplishment it was for Bama to get Saban. I didn't think they could make it happen but they did.

Sounds like you are reconciling in your head some thoughts to make yourself feel good.

I didn't post it to make myself feel good or to sing the praises of Alabama. Just my feelings on trying to hire a coach in today's college football climate.

Arkansas is experiencing it now, and Michigan will experience it soon. And LSU would've experienced it if Miles had left. you've got valid points, dont take the rantards' ridicule seriously. they would have had a meltdown when neither spurrier nor saban came with their resumes in hand.

I think two things differ about the coaching searches going on now and what Bama went through last year.

1) I don't think anyone has agreed to coach anywhere this yer and backed out.

2) I don't see anyone offering a a $30MM+ guaranteed contract with no buyout going the other way to bring in a coach this year.

True, there are still vacancies open, so we will see. I do think that the Saban deal was a sodomizing of Bama. After all the turmoil there, it is what it took to get a big name to come to Alabama. Bama boosters wouldn't have been happy with hiring a virtual no-name, unless he was "family" and no big name coach would have come to Bama without cashing in big time.

You do have a few valid points but dont stereotype the AL job amongst others. The AL job is way more pressure filled, etc. than about any other not to mention the damn idiotic fans and media in those parts of the woods. We may have had some what of a time in getting a good, quality hc but we would not have had to gone the extremes you guys did.

However, you will probably admit that you would feel better about your "purchase" had you beaten ULM and/or Auburn. There's always next year.

Not so much of an accomplishment, but more because the Bama job was open at the same time Saban wanted to come back to college football. timing is what got him, not some outstanding accomplishment. no disrespect to the load of cash that came with it.
