How much dI'd your second child cost?

The only place it's been less than twice as much as the first kid is healthcare. My wife went from being on an independent individual plan along with our first to moving to a family plan with her employer. We went from paying like $150 for each to like $375/ month for all 3 in the family plan.

That and already having clothes, high hair, car seat, etc. but frankly most of that was gifts.

The other way we've started and will have to continue to save money is a lifestyle change. We were still able to live well and stay busy socially with 1. With 2 it's a lot more difficult to we've tried to stop doing so much. We try to not go to events as much as just hang out with friends with kids at each other's houses and what not. The more kids you have the more keeping up with the Jone's becomes something you stop caring about.

How old is your first child? Things like diapers, food/formula, clothes, wipes, etc, haven't gone up that much in the last few years. If anything, there seems to be more generic options available these days.

If you have same gender for second kid and kept all the stuff from first kid, obvously you can reuse all that.

Car seats can be used for up to 5 years from date of purchase before they "expire"

Depending upon your current kid's age and bedroom stuff, you may need to buy someone a new bedroom set.

Childcare facilities will usually give you a slight multi-child discount. Maybe 5-10 percent. But remember the baby room is the most expensive room at a child care. When we lived in Katy, we used A Child's Reflection who was amazing and I think multiple kids got you 5 percent off the cheapest tuition (this was over 4 years ago).

The biggest thing for us (ours are two girls, three years apart) was the cost of prenatal care and childbirth. When we had our oldest, my wife's insurance was a good plan, we paid $50 flat fee for the entire prenatal stuff. We paid a flat $1500 for the entire hospital stay for childbirth, including mom and child.

By the time second kid came around, her insurance had been forced to switch to a high deducible plan. Total costs were closer to $6,000 for both prenatal and hospital care.
