This evil spawn of Satan climbed under the engine cover while I was washing the boat.

Rat snake.
Why the frick would a snake want to go inside an engine cover? Was it on the ground?

I took the engine cover off to clean the engine and it climbed under it on the dock.

Did you have to go clean your britches when you lifted the cover?

Banded or brown water snake. Very common.

Banded and brown water snakes are two completely different species.
Though I am leaning towards Banded (aka Southern) water snake - Nerodia fasciata. I'd like to see the belly though. That pattern and coloration are somewhat atypical if it is N fasciata.

Doesn't look like any water snake I've ever seen.

Alx, I'm actually pretty stumped by this one. I think I'm changing my guess to Midland water snake. Or just plain Northern water snake, but Midland is a subspecies that looks a little closer. I'm focusing on the brownish triangular areas (between the black blotches/bands) with a black spot in the center of the base of the triangular areas, Still, the color looks atypical. I'd love to see a head shot and a ventral shot.
ETA: Whatever it is, it isn't anything I've seen before in my area and nothing I'd recognize on sight.

Same here. still not sure it's pattern is more bold than some of the pics I have seen of some of these.

Saddles and side markings lead Mr. Dot to believe it's a very vividly-colored Prairie Kingsnake. Extremely dark though.
Was this in the western part of Lafayette?

Looks like a prairie kingsnake to me. Lampropeltis calligaster. The juveniles are often boldly patterned like that.
Do you have a picture that you took with something other than a potato? I highly doubt it's any sort of water snake due to its smooth glossy appearance but it is really tough to say with that picture.
Edit: Damn you Dorothy and my slow iPad typing

My first thought was young midland water snake. But, I'm not sure if they're in LA and I didn't feel like googling it. A second photo would help a lot.

Hmmm I like that guess too. Wish we had some more pics.
