Most guys make it to the MLB coming out of AA first then if it does not work they put them down to AAA. Not saying this always happens but usually it does.

Not with Astros hitters. They rather promote a pitcher from AA than a hitter. Look at correa last year, put up insane AA numbers and they still made him go to AAA.

To be fair I thought it was major leagues too when I read OP.. I assumed he was already starting in the minors.

Really...wow.

Minor league players are professionals, being paid to play baseball.

Glad they already moved him to third. There is a huge hole at the corners at the major league level. The Astros are more than likely to move up Colin Moran before they give Alex a shot in the league. Moran is the #6 (per MLB) prospect in the Astros system to Bregman's #1. Regardless I hope both happen sooner rather than later.

Hah. A few reasons why.

-Moran's natural position is 3rd.
-He's already spent a full year in double A and is not in triple A.
-He's over a year older.
-He's had more success at the minor league level so far.

I don't expect him to be the long term answer at 3rd.

Where a prospect is ranked is not directly proportional to how far along they are in the minors. Moran is hitting near .300 in AAA while Bregman is in AA. Moran is also a true 3B so he likely gets a chance to take that job first.

Bregman can always play left field to get into the lineup for Houston if Moran plays well at third.

That is what Berkman did for most of his career since Bagwell was at first.

Yep. Bregman is going to be an everyday regular in Houston for a long time no matter where they play him.

I appreciate your and Farmer's explanations on how promotions for minor league players works.

I admit I've never followed minor league baseball very closely ever since I was disillusioned by Bull Durham. It was a damn shame how they treated Crash Davis.....

I feel you, Bro. I gave up on hockey after Adam Banks washed out in the minors.

While somewhat on the general topic of minor league baseball, last week when I was in South Bend for the LSU/Notre Dame games, I went to the Cubs' affiliate "A" team's stadium, the South Bend Cubs. It is a beautiful venue built down into the ground so that when you walk into the stadium, you're on the top concourse level and all seats are below you. I was so impressed I bought a "South Bend Cubs" t-shirt.

Bregman will be traded, most likely for pitching when the need arises. Astros are young, something disastrous would have to happen to crack that lineup.

Nah. Astros farm system is flush with arms. Impact bats, particularly one of Bregman's profile are thin in the farm.

They're sitting at 15-24 right now. 3rd baseman is hitting .200, CF is hitting .180. Both are free agents after the year. Bregs will have a place in the lineup if he continues to hit.

I gotta disagree. I think Bregman is apart of the long term plans. That is why he is moving to 3rd.

Outside of Altuve (2nd), Correra (SS), and Springer (RF) there is no one in the everyday line up that is a long term player. Rasmus is playing well, but he's on a one year deal. There are significant holes at 3rd, 1st, and now CF too with Gomez shitting the bed. Looking in the minors you have AJ Reed at 1st, Bregman now at 3rd, and way down in A for Cameron & Tucker (both OFs).

Also, Fisher and Hernandez in AA are improving OF prospects (especially Fisher who has real pop) but neither will block Bregman.

Most of us expect Rasmus to re-sign and play center field leaving left to Bregman if Moran (who the GM loves) takes the 3B job like they hope.
