I tend to agree in a case like this. It is sort of like departments that refuse to enter into a high-speed chase with a suspect - we don't want crime to win, but the safety of the public should be the #1 concern.

In this case, with a knife, I'd prefer to see a cop try to de-escalate the situation. If she's walking towards you, back up. It doesn't seem like it had to be confrontational, although once that happens, the shots are warranted. I'd just like to see that situation avoided altogether whenever feasible.

Seriously? She was clearly involved in an argument the cops were called on, wielding a fricking cleaver. And you want the cop to move out of her way so she can walk wherever she wants? What if she was still trying to go after someone behind him?

What if she wasn't? We don't know the details surrounding the video, but IF it was feasible to back up and/or get out of the way, that should be the preferred course of action.

If she was going to attack him or someone surrounding him, then the shots are justified. I think we're just discussing alternative measures that MAY or MAY NOT have been feasible.

I was in Walmart parking lot waiting on the wife and watched a dude run out perused by cops only to get dropped right in from of me. They probably thought I was an a-hole b/c I was hysterically laughing and that dude floundering about on the hot asphalt.

She clearly continued to approach him. One toss of that cleaver and who knows what happens. Sure he could have "diffused" the situation by shooting her in the leg or arm which is "feasible", but that isnt what he is taught.

How do you "de-escalate" a situation with a cleaver wielding crazy bitch who doesnt speak english? Pointing a gun at her clearly didnt work.

I don't know the whole situation but it just doesn't seem like shooting this person 5 times was justified.

You shoot until the threat is stopped.

How about just move back out of the way and see if she actually comes at you instead of putting 5 shots in someone who isn't carrying a gun?

Because by the time you do figure out the person is coming after you, it's too late.

I'm not against police protecting themselves at all it just doesn't look like this situation was worth lethal force..

The use of force continuum says otherwise. If the person makes an overt threat with a weapon which can cause death or serious bodily injury, the USSC has stated lethal force can be used.

Thx for actually answering my question b/c I had no clue.. The string of downvoters must assume i'm taking up for the woman, which i'm not.

if it were me and the call came in "crazy lady with knife"..I'm breaking out

cuz a floundering person is amusing..

Ya if a cop pointing a gun at her doesn't get the message across to stop what you are doing backing up and yelling at her certainly wont.

I guess walking backwards would be ok, but i wouldn't want to potentially give up sure footing walking backwards without looking while some is running around with a knife right in front of me.

40+ years in this country and you don't speak English....

Have a Laotioan ex whose parents immigrated in the late 70's and they still barely speak any English. Fully refuse to assimilate.

They are also racist as frick.

Why does every video, no matter the length, need a fricking ad?

Hey, heard you were about to watch a video of an old lady getting shot, let me tell you about Zillow and how it can help your home-buying needs. And guess what? A house just opened...

I haven't been able to watch the video at work, so I'm not sure what the circumstances are outside of what is being discussed in this thread.

I said in my first post that when things get to the point of the picture in the OP, shots are justified. I'm not sure who approached who to begin the situation. In general, however, it often seems like these situations are escalated by the police and their actions. That may or may not have been the case here.

None of that means the lady wielding a cleaver is innocent by any stretch of the imagination.

Yea I get that, but she was never a threat to him after those first couple shots. After getting shot, she didn't run away, towards him. She just stopped, it was clear she wasn't a further threat. Why shoot 3 more times?
