Sly and the Family Stone: Greatest American band or no?

Haven't listened to much of their albums with exception to their main hits(which are ace) so I couldn't unequivocally agree with that assessment. What I do know is how influential and cutting edge they were in the context of their time and Sly was a massive influence on Prince and the progressive funk movement of the 70s.
What are your thoughts?

I think it is impossible to say who is the Greatest American Band or even try to give my opinion on who that would be. They are awesome though and certainly up there and to me are one of the great American bands.

I think, due to my limitations of knowledge on every band this country ever had but general broad knowledge, they are severely underrated in the lexicon of rock music and probably better instrumentally than given credit for. They were arguably the masters of groove and hopefully my future listening experience will reflect that.
I also think it's amazing Sly Stone is still alive. People talk about Keith Richards all the time, but Sly Stone and Keith Moon were him x1000 in terms of substance abuse.

I think Aerosmith and the Eagles would rank far above them. Not saying they're bad but certainly not greatest.

They were something of a phenomenon as well, the Halley's Comet of rock music. They had their success window of 1968-73 and then poof they vanished. People generally don't mention them as an incredibly influential or important band or in "greatest" lists. They could arguably be the most underrated band in history.

And I'd take the Allman Bros, CCR, The Doors way before the Eagles and Aerosmith

Allman Brothers and Doors are ace as well. Underrated instrumentally with the exception of Duane.

I just meant that I couldn't even tell you my personal best is from the american bands I actively listen to so there is no way I could try and answer the question of are they the greatest. I'm leaning towards no, not the greatest, but they are one of my favorites.

Sly and the FS were a great band and their music endures. Personally, I wouldn't choose any American band as "the greatest". Too many diverse great and influential bands in this country.

What about greatest American rock band? I think a strong case can be made for them.

Depends on style of music. Aerosmith, Eagles, Beach Boys, KISS may all be in the discussion, for example, but it's hard to rank them musically due to difference in style.
One could certainly rank bands together if you're talking about impact on popular culture or something like that.

Too much competition to say they are the greatest but their Woodstock set rivals the best live performances ever .
