We wouldn't make it to Zagreb in time to catch the train

I know the struggle, we did a 6am ferry from Hvar to split, bus from split to Zagreb, showed up just in time(literally running from bus to train station) to catch train to Budapest and then got to Budpaest at 10pm that night and found an airbnb. the longest worst travel day ever. We did it all without a plan too got really lucky

Getting around Croatia is a pain. We took the train from Budapest to Zagreb then caught a flight to Dubrovnik. After hanging out in Dubrovnik for a while we took the ferry to Hvar and Split. From Split we took the bus to Mostar and then the train to Sarajevo.

ETA - To OP, I would not take a bus from Split to Vienna. I would think that would be 12+ hrs. I would just eat the cost and fly or take a bus to somewhere I could catch a train. Renting cars and dropping off in another country is too expensive. All depends on how much you value your comfort/time.
