Heading up there next week for a bachelor party. Not real familiar with fishing oxbows, be prepared to tear them up or be prepared to get tore up?

Pretty sure the #1 rule on Lake St. John and most all oxbows is

to get tore up

Bring noodles for catfish if y'all plan on frying fish one night

YoYo's are will catch all you want on that lake. Bream are biting there as well.

Start fishing 1-2 hours before daylight to catch some stripers by the under water lights.

Beautiful lake. So few people, like going back in time. Bass fishing tough as nails. Crankbait around all the piers, deep diver, KVD2.5 shad color is good and bandit 200 series bream color works. Too water all the trees for 1hour from barely daylight. Bream and catfish can be done anyplace. Literally. Carolina worms on bottom.

The Dock, baw. I can't catch shite on that lake, except a buzz.

Bring plenty of silver rattle traps and troll from the boat launch South for 3/4 of a mile off the boat docks in the 20-35 ft depth for constant big hybrid striped bass action.

I haven't been to St. John lately, but the shad spawn should be going on. You should be able to catch a few busting shad first thing in the morning. Might have some luck on a Carolina rig later in the morning or a med diving crankbait. If your fishing docks be sure to fish the whole dock thoroughly. Oxbow's can be tuff to fish just keep grinding along is the best thing I can tell you. You might not catch anything for two hours then find a brush pile and pick up 5 or 6 right quick.

I've done pretty good flipping swim jigs in the cypress knees this time of the year in "bream" colors...
but...I usually fish Concordia just south of there...

That probably won't happen.

Lol then go in the middle of the night. Putt around looking for lights after some food and beer from the ducks nest. Fishing those lights with anything shiny is a damn good time

Gorgeous lake, terrible fishing.
Had a great time but would not go back as a fishing destination.

No one has theorized why the fishing is terrible at St. John.
There has to be a reason.

I've never had much luck fishing St. John during the day. If there is the slightest bit of wind it will be white capping. But right after dark when the wind lays the striped bass fishing turns on on the back side of the lake. Just cruise up to lights and see them schooling after the bait fish. Throw a white crank bait and get ready for the fight of your life. Make sure you troll up to them the last hundred yards. It's a blast.
